Top All Time Kansas Distance guys

I don't remember the guys name, but at the '79 KS Juco Conference track meet, a guy from Garden City won the 1,500, then the 5,000 and then the 10,000 all on the same day. Winning each race with a strong kick. Quite a performance!

I don't remember the times, but I know the 1,500 and 5,000 were tough runs as both races had some very good runners in them. The 10,000 was an easier race and he just had to keep contact and kick with a lap to go.

I would classify a Kansan as someone who graduated from high school in Kansas. But that's just me. Technically for a true all time road list list Jerry's trying to build then they should have been born in the state as well. BTW... I'll email Luder and get his mile and 10K times.

you raise a good point. For college lists, I was thinking were a person graduated high school as their state of residence (even though they may go off to college and live in another state for a while - they are still from, say Kansas).

Post-college does get a little tricky. For most states road race records, they seem to take where that person is currently living as their state of residence (which certainly seems fair). I know for Kansas, for instance, if someone living outside the state break the state record at a certain distance they are credited with the record, but the state also keeps resident state records (for those living within the state at the time of their race).

My lists are an attempt to credit the runners who grew up and graduated from a Kansas high school (and either moved out of state or didn't move but ran their fastest times out of state)...so I guess in a way the list could identify whether those times (their career best) were done as residence or non-resident Kansan's.

I'll use my self as an example to clairfy this. I am from Kansas and have lived here my whole life, yet all of my fastest time were done at road races outside the state of Kansas - therefore they are never listed in the Kansas Road Race Records Book.

Another runner from Kansas - who moves out of state - also never gets credit back home in Kansas for their best performances since they no longer are considered a resident.

So look up Kansas' best Marathoner and Fred Tornaden's 2:11:35 will not be listed (it wasn't done in Kansas). Look up Curt Shelman's fastest 8K and his 23:30- something also not there - done out of state. Then we have all those guys who left the state for college or after college, and many of us never realized how fast they got...Ben Schoonover, Gary Gregory, yourself etc etc etc. Maybe this exposes a flaw in the current state records lists or just another way of recognizing runner from each state, but it sure seems like someone would have thought of this a long time ago. If not, that's ok - better late than never.

I remember racing a Gary Gregory who ran the steeple and road races for the SMTC in the mid 80s, is that the same guy? Where is he from in Kansas? I always figured he was a local.

yes, Gary is from kansas...moved back after his years of running with the Santa Monica Track Club - where he made the oly trils standard one year in the steeple, but it was 1 day after the deadline or something like that so they wouldn't accept it!

He opened and nows run a running store in Wichita called First Gear.

I wonder if the course was not certified then, because none of those times have ever been listed in the Kansas road records book.

Gary went to Goddard High school probably graduated 79-80

and Wichita State University

I did notice after retiring from running he has started doing triathlons - doing the Buffalo Spring 1/2 ironman last summer in Lubbock Texas

James Strang's mom says she is from Kansas, so her son James should be the best ever.

Gary went to Goddard High School and then to Barton County and then Wichita State (I think that is right)...Gary also has the dubious honor of qualifying for the Olympic Trials only to find out it was a day late...that was in 1984...

He also has a fqst marathon as well...2:17 range I believe...

regarding kansas guys with fast out of state performances, i know pat hessini ran for Nike-Texas for a year or two and had a few fast races. i'll get with him on some exact times.

regarding a marathon list, david keller had a decent Whiterock marathon 5 or so years ago. i want to say he went under 2:30. i will check with him also.

Top guys on the Kansas list have no decent 5k times to speak of, though it is apparent from their mile times, steeple times, 10k times, etc., that they could have easily run under 13:50.

One of the reasons Kansas is lacking in the quality 5k times is due to the state being very late allowing high schoolers to compete at any distance above 2 miles. I believe it was one of the last four states (if not the last, sorry for poor memory)to allow cross to be longer than 2 miles. Thus was due to the Jim Ryan legacy and his holding many course records that administrators of the state's sports didn't want to change because of his hero status there. Brent Steiner, who ran like a grey hound, could have posted fabulous 5k time in high school.
