That doesn't mean he had nothing left. You don't know for a fact what he was experiencing.
Neither do you.
Thank you. That means we can't be sure he had nothing left to respond with. If he had seen Laros coming and not responded we would know for a fact he was done. But because he didn't until they were at the line we can't be sure of that.
I'm not claiming to know what he thought. But he didn't appear to see Laros closing on him until it was too late. So none of you know whether he might have had something left if he was aware of the danger.
When a runner ties up like that in an ultra-competitive 1500n race, it’s a certainty that someone else is closing fast and there’s no way Nuguse thought he had it wrapped up. He was also trying to run his fastest time possible.
You should actually watch the race - or are your eyes too far gone? Nuguse was in distress the entire final straight. He was slowing down. That happens.
He also thought that he had dropped everybody. You don't know that he didn't have an extra stride in him, unless he saw Aros closing on him and tried to summon the extra effort. He didn't see - until Aros clipped him on the line.

It isn't a certainty that someone else is closing fast. There have been very few races like this one at this level, when the winner in a 1500 gained 30 metres in the last lap. Nuguse had dropped Habz and was so far ahead of the field he could easily have thought in the last few metres that he had it in the bag. We have seen runners find something extra in the closing moments of a race - El G famously did so in Athens after he was passed by Lagat. But Nuguse made two mistakes; he drifted wide in the home straight and appeared unaware of Laros so he didn't run through the line.

Who’s Aros?
What's a typo? Or predictive text? I have referred to him as Laros throughout the thread.

Nuguse thought he had it won. He didn't see Laros coming so he eased up on the line. You don't know that he might have had a final lunge in him had he realised.
You don't know what Nuguse thought.
Yes, we could tell what Nuguse thought by his actions at the finish. Had he noticed Laros sneaking up on him, he would have at least leaned. It was a miserable way to lose the race.
If Nuguse had known that leaning a little farther over, even if that meant falling on his face after the line, would secure a victory, he would have done it. I'm confident of that, for whatever it is worth.

debatable splitting hairs
If you look behind, you lose a small bit of momentum.
? most honorable way to lose, epic memorable co winners ?
He was slowing metres before the line - possibly thinking he couldn't be caught - before he was aware of the danger of Laros. His leaning at the line was belated and too late. But it is conceivable if he had tried to put more into the last few metres he could have won, the margin was that close.

Learn to proof you senile coot.
So every predictive text typo on these threads is an indication of senility? BTW, you probably meant "learn to proof read" but you forgot to finish the phrase. What's that an indication of?
