I can't believe Tim Hutchings called Mary Moraa a great tactician on the commentary.
I think she is an interesting one from a tactical perspective because she runs so strangely that athletes don't know what to do against her. Hodgkinson used to let Moraa boss her around on the track until last year.
But I wouldn't call Moraa a good tactician. I don't see the sense in going from first to last to first again in an 800. She's definitely entertaining though.

Warholm stomped the field in Oslo, but I believe that was Rai’s first race this year so I’m not surprised he couldn’t keep up with Warholm. I’m picking Karsten for the win here but maybe Benjamin will close the gap back up. Dos Santos doesn’t seem quite up to his rivals at the moment
The 800 and 5000 look pretty great too
Benjamin was great in Oslo but it is difficult to beat a guy who broke the 300mh with a big margin and for the second time this year!
I believe this was the first race of Benjamin for the season, and the first time he has run the 300H, while Warholm has run several.
Femke 52.11, Muhammed 52.91. Muhammed was inside of Bol, so Bol couldn't see her until the final straight where they were dead even over the 8th hurdle then Bol pulled away easily to win by almost a second. #2 time this season behind Levrone's 52.07, Muhammed ran her fastest time in several years.
this is Delilah's last season. I am happy to see her run a sub 53.

Wiley ran the exact same way in Zurich last year and held on to second until the final 30m when Bell passed her. Lost to Moraa and Bell, beat Reekie, Sekgodiso, Maloney, Lamonte, and Werro.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. She has nearly clinched a spot in the DL final now. One more good race at a DL and she will seal it.

Who cares. She will come in 4th - 6th at USAs, 6 - 8th in DL finals. Until she joins a new group, she will continue to underimpress when it matters and magically run fast at some worthless meet at the end of the season. Join a REAL group with a REAL coach and make USA proud.

I was starting to feel down on him. I think GST getting cancelled gives him a chance to reset a bit. He races a ton, and sometimes is at his best too early.

She won the 800 in Miami. Hasn’t really been that long. In Philly, she failed to execute her tactics too.
Did she? Who else was in that race? Any of the stronger 800m runners? Even the commentators are saying she is not in great form and hasn’t had the best start to the season. And I’d agree.
Her tactics did stop working last year when Keely started beating her. Now Hunter-Bell is also unfazed.
I’m sure all the coaches (if they are decent) will go through this race with the runners and highlight what Moraa does over and over again and how best to deal with that.
The best tacticians are those that run their own race and don’t get in to bad positions..they also keep people guessing. Running the same every race is not the best tactic…

Id agree her form has been off. Id also say that her tactics dont work against every race plan. However i think Sekgodiso, Wiley, Reekie, and Werro are all in comparable shape. Its pretty good if her strategy which rendered the pacer irrelevant got her to beating all of them, and some by a lot.

Not true. Great athletes can win races despite poor tactics. Asbel Kiprop did this for years.
Watch the 2023 Worlds final. Moraa ran the entire race in lane 2, save for a few steps on the outside of lane 1 on the first turn of the bell lap. Those are not good tactics. But it didn't matter.
BTW, it is painful to watch Mu run so wide on those turns.
He gets paid MILLIONS in large part due to his speed, quickness and explosiveness IN PADS. And has a track and field background, albeit some time ago.
I firmly believe that if track paid more than football and basketball, the current US record holders at the collegiate and pro level would look different today.
Some of the University of Miami’s most talented football teams under Butch Davis had some studs run track.
