I don’t see any BS. These coaches prioritize their college teams over supporting their professional athletes. Those are facts without question. For example the coaches won't be able to attend such an important event like the world championships in Tokyo due to conflicting schedules with the NCAA in September. Mia Barnett's future decisions aside, it's evident that the focus has shifted towards college coaching. The Bowerman group, or whatever it may be called now, seems to have lost its appeal for professional athletes with the emergence of better coaching options available today. It's their choice to shift to see figures like Jerry and Shalane transition towards college coaching. Their dedication to nurturing young talent is commendable, but it's disheartening to see the neglect towards the professional realm. Or Nike slow it to happen.

If you assume most of the runs are on the roads in Mammoth, you were not in the right place. Snow can be a challenge on some winters, but you can find dirt roads east of Mammoth or head south towards Bishop or beyond. But I lived in Chula Vista near the OTC for many years and would see Ryan Hall, Ian Dobson, or whomever from that crew in the winter pretty often leading up to the '08 games and beyond. They were not in Mammoth year-round. Favorable prices...heck everywhere is expensive now.
I have to disagree. There is one set of roads behind the track in Mammoth. Yes they go for miles but they are extremely rocky. Most pros and even high schools run on the damn highway in mammoth. And there is no coverage in the summer all exposed to the sun. And like others mentioned there is way more snow in Mammoth than other altitude places to train. Also altitude for most runs in Mammoth is over 8000ft and that’s another downfall. Perfect is 7000ft to 7500ft. Training too high can work against you. NAU and Adams State are dominated for partially that reason. Both schools are 7000ft to 7500ft. I can’t speak for Big Bear because I’ve never been there, but the altitude seems perfect and access to sea level is the best I’ve heard of. But again I’ve never been there.
I lived in Mammoth in the late 90s and early 2000s and still go up there as much as possible although rarely to mountain bike, but fly fish so I'm out on Benton Crossing Road (the green church) and past the track that is located where one of my best friend's old paintball park was located. I am very familiar with the area. If I was still coaching, I would take my athletes out there to run on the dirt roads along the Owen's River. Why a high school coach would have their athletes run 395 in the summer is stupid to the point I would have to ask what schools do that. I've never seen that. There are so many trails and forest services right at Shady Rest park that connect over to Mammoth Scenic Lake Road among other places. That's where I've always seen multiple teams running July through August and I took my teams when I coached. Pretty much anywhere I mountain biked or cross country skiied, unless it was in the Mammoth Bike Park. I also said in an earlier post, don't think the Ryan Hall teams were not running all winter in Mammoth. There were at the OTC in Chula Vista when the weather was snowy.

Most individuals and pro teams stopped going to Mammoth for altitude training camps for the obvious reasons.

Brosnan doesn't even deserve a pro group. He has 6 years of high school experience and 1 year of college experience that DID NOT go well. Having a good high school team does not warrant getting a pro group.
Salazar, Schumacher, and Julian are some of the most SUCCESSFUL coaches in American distance running history. Brosnan does not deserve to be in the same sentence as them.

That 4:08.44 is still her 1500 PR. The 4:06.66 is a converted mile. 1.8 seconds over two years and farther away from the top is not a lot of progress.

I don’t think most would agree that Brosnan is one of the better coaching options. I guess we’ll find out when pros that are good enough to be coached by Schumacher start choosing Brosnan instead. However, at this point, there are ZERO pros being coached by Brosnan.

She finally got a PR in the Mile for the past two years at Oregon. Not sure that’s working well. Given the current circumstances for professional athletes in Eugene, I wouldn't be surprised if she starts exploring other options. It seems like Eugene isn't the most desirable place to live for non-students and a half time coach as a pro.

You do know that her former teammate at UVA Margot Appleton is now NCAA #1 right?
Barnett was better off staying with Vin at UVA.
She had a great XC right before she transferred to UCLA, so she clearly was going to run fast indoors and outdoors because those are her stronger seasons. Vin had already gotten her into great shape, all Brosnan had to do was drive her to meets.
Both are fantastic athletes. She’s always been a low mileage runner. Oregon has given her far more stamina. I think the mileage load has come later in college which will help her progression. Mia only 21 and Margo 22. Both have great futures on the younger end of elite college talent.
Who cares where she decides to run post-college, or if she even chooses to continue running at all? Given that she is from California, returning home might be a more suitable option for her compared to Eugene. Furthermore, Mia has yet to make a final at NCAAs, indicating she may not be in high demand as a top recruit for professional groups. Let's face facts - she isn't exceptionally fast in the 800 or 5k. While I do wish her well, it should ultimately be her decision where and with which coach she chooses to run.
Quickly like after a decade. Meb, Deena, the Halls, Dan Browne and many many others were there for years. I think the downfall was that it wasn't a year round spot.
But that's completely off topic because Big Bear and Mammoth Lakes aren't the same thing.
Mammoth is far from sea level is a ski town due to heavy snow and unforgiving high expenses to rent, but or live. Big Bear, on the other hand, is quite different from Mammoth, being located at varying altitudes ranging from 6800ft to 7500ft. It generally experiences less snow, is only an hour away from sea level, and offers a more affordable living option.
