After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum with Russia. Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in exchange for Russia' agreement to respect Ukraine's borders. Within days of signing, Russia launched an attack on Grozny, Chechnya. The First Chechen War ensued and lasted two years. It was a brutal conflict with Russia killing tens of thousands of civilians. Peace only lasted a few years and the second Chechen war broke out in 1999. This was when Yeltsin resigned and Putin was appointed prime minister. Putin's campaign in Chechnya was equally as brutal as the first, with virtually every building in Grozny being destroyed in Russian shelling.

NATO's first expansion after German reunification Czechia, Poland and Hungary in 1999. This was a direct reaction to a post-Soviet Russia that instead of turning swords into plowshares was ramping up its armed forces to very violently keep the new Russian Republic together. Czechia, Poland and Hungary joined NATO so they would never be under threat of having to become a Russian satellite. After the Chechan war, the Baltic states joined NATO in 2004. At the same time, these nations joined the European Union.

In the 1990s, Russia was an economic basket case and emerged under Putin as a repressive oligarchy. The former Soviet Satellites had a clear choice. Join the EU and NATO and have a bright economic future free of the threat of Russian invasion or be a sitting duck for Putin. And that is exactly where Ukraine ended up in Putin's crosshairs in 2014. Ukraine was moving towards the EU, but Putin saw that as a threat to his efforts to expand Russia's influence out towards the former Soviet Satellites. NATO expansion had nothing to do with Western aggression towards Russia. Instead, it had everything to do with stopping looming Russian aggression towards its former Soviet Satellites. And that is exactly what Russia did when it invaded Crimea and then started the war in 2022.

Pretty sure that will solve the border issue. Maybe you will finally get a beautiful wall along the Mexican border, and China Iran and Russia are going to pay for it. This is a brilliant idea. You should replace Steve Miller to be Trump’s top advisor.

Well, they have competition, so don’t lapse into the contemporary need to launch into the superlative. “Least”? Eh. Close, sure. And maybe, maybe “least” for Trump, but we’re a ways away from the jury being out on that. For decades, I knew lots of very responsible, smart, tough guys who could scarcely stomach the kind of boastful, chest-thumping, pretender that Trump is. It was basically a truism that you just knew the story of a guy who talked really tough but exhibited so many of his other personal characteristics: Weak-a** fraud.

But the way party politics are, and given the way they had reasonable distaste for some on the other side, people get their judgement clouded, and about a quarter or third of those guys went anywhere from being willing to put up with him to strongly siding with him. To their credit, none of them are big cheerleaders or the sort to fly flags depicting him with a Rambo physique.

This was embarrassing. Cringe to the core. Whatever you think of Zelensky, NATO, or our involvement in this war, however much of an expert or ignoramus you are on this subject there are a couple truths every American knows

1. Russia invaded Ukraine unprovoked.

2. Zelensky, rather than flee like we know Trump, Vance or Elon would if in the same situation, chose to fight.

Now, whether or not that choice was a good choice...isn't relevant in the optics here because Americans LOVE fighters. we love grit and strength and facing down enemies. And we know...even the cult knows...Trump wouldn't do any of those things when faced with an enemy who could destroy him.

We know trump would save, not the country. But himself.

And so, an America who fancies themselves strong fighters watched a man, who we KNOW is a battle worn leader sit with two absolute buffoons, overweight, slovenly, and pathetic, attempt to bully him. Bullies, true bullies, are cowards. And they came across not as strongmen, but as cowards.
