I think it would be so much easier if Nikki talked more about how they are female by sex and have (presumably) never taken testosterone or undergone other treatment that would make them ineligible for competing in the women's category. Since sex doesn't change, they will compete in the women's races (i.e. at the Olympics) though they might consider competing in the nonbinary category if presented with the opportunity.
My guess is they wouldn't publicly speak on why they are still competing in women's races though because any biological reason such as "I was assigned female at birth and I have not taken any treatment such as testosterone that would grant me an advantage" would contradict allowing transgender women to compete in women's races.
It's such a shame because I really think Nikki could've used their interview to address the commonly misunderstood sex vs. gender or how it feels to be in a mixed race (maybe more liberating?).

this is a very reasonable take and i wish there could be some sort of resolution to the discord currently present with Nikki
as much as some of her views and political statements annoy me, i think like most people she's a good person at heart that is doing the best she can to do what feels right to her
i can't help but wonder if the non-binary, transgender etc. community is represented by an extremely vocal minority that misrepresents them as being completely unreasonable when it comes to the male v. female argument.
props to Caitlyn Jenner for calling it like it is and stating the obvious when it comes to sports
someone like Nikki could win over so many fans and get so much more compassion if she just said something like, "look, I know it's natural for you to use pronouns like she/her with me and don't feel bad if you do, but as crazy as it sounds to most people i really do appreciate it when referred to as they. i totally get the singular/plural cognitive dissonance issue and trust me it annoys me too (laughs). if the commentators are calling the final lap and the action is wild i don't want them so worried about offending me they don't say anything at all. and for those of you that just can't understand my lifestyle, be thankful you weren't a tomboy growing up in norcal in the 2000s!"
if she could say something real for once it would do wonders. poke a little fun at herself. it doesn't all have to be so serious making it like we're walking on eggshells trying to be so PC
if Nikki is not a "woman", why did she need the 30 second head start???
