Somebody on tik tok mentioned that they booked the track for just 10 days. And that was my assumption as well. From experience watching these scamsters for decades I can say, that defeat is never part of the plan. It's always full success or nothing. There have been trans con attempts where people ran out of money so they "ran" a little faster.
After my epic run I FELT like I could have done a few more days just like it.
But in reality, it would have been different had I actually tried it.
I probably would have packed it in after only an hour!
...and what was yours? I think we might have some big dogs in here...
It was nothing. I did 100k in one day, without stopping, except to eat and drink.
I did it because my dad saw a tv show on which they stated that “native north americans” were capable of incredible feats, such as running 100k in one day.
I said no big, he said bs, I said he was an a-hole and that if I did it he would have to shut the hell up.
I did it, he followed in the car at intervals. From our house to our cottage. It was a great day, total zen.
By today’s standards, essentially nothing. By my 1983 standards, pretty awesome.
I recommend everyone try something like it sometime. Pretty cool. I drank a lot of milk along the way!
A lot more than that.. there's the likes of Patrick Macke, Dusan Mravlje, even 61 year old Cliffy Young in '83. The number is definitely in the triple digits.
72 hours was not a race format until recently. So all 72 hour marks a splits from longer races and probably a lot of splits didn't end up in the DUV data base.
Certainly, there's plenty of halfway splits from 6 Day races we're missing. And there's also a lot of ultra history prior to the mid '90s not captured by DUV. There's no results for the 1991 Campbelltown 6 Day for example. The further we go back, the patchier runners' careers appear.
I just looked at Joe Record's 6 Day wins from the '80s, to compare his 48 hour splits with his daily average over the last 4 days.
Joe was renowned for his front-running approach to racing, seemingly never afraid to take the race to his competition early. Eccentric, introspective, erudite, charming and affable, Joe was one of the most intriguing and entertaining talents of his generation.
1983 La Rochelle 6 Day, 868km. His 48 hour split 355km, plus closing daily average of 128km, gives a conservative estimate of 483km for his 72 hour split.
1987 Colac 6 Day, 890km. Similarly, Joe's 48 hour split of 345km, plus a closing daily average of 136km gives a conservative estimate of 481km for 72 hours.
We can add Joe's name to our list of 3 Day/300 Mile runners. More pertinently, his results illustrate how incomplete that list is.
Credit to Stevepope though, you've sparked a more interesting discussion than has Nedd's progress.
It's a good move. Recover, avoid the hot weather today. Then restart with the goal to finish 1,000 miles at a realistic level for his ability and training level.
The physio seems decent, ditch the coach and nutritionist, they are clueless, and add an experienced multi day runner as a mentor.
For the next challenge, be humble, prepare properly, execute with purpose, and most importantly avoid chasing anything ever previously done by Yiannis Kouros.
I agree with you about recalibrating his goals and adding some wiser heads to his crew. He needs people that are going to call out bullsh!t and not blow smoke up his arse.
Nedd (and his crew) would do well to compete in some established races against some decent competition. It would allow them all to develop some perspective on his ability, to learn by surrounding themselves with experienced runners and crews, and perhaps find some respect for the sport and maybe some humility.
You want to market yourself as the best ultra runner of all time? Go out and race against the best.
You want your performance measured against Kouros? Have accurate and independent lap scoring.

This sounds far too sensible and no way to make a lot of noise and money..
he is back out approx 4:30pm after maybe 6 hrs break I think.

Good on ya!!
I agree. It's fun to do mad stuff. People get hung up on distance and speed when all it's about is surprising and pushing yourself.

you’re missing the point. this isn’t about being the best multi-day athlete possible. it’s about making money, self promotion, Instagram followers, sponsorships, getting your own brand of flavoured milk, etc.
…and they are going about it in exactly the right manner.
Also...considering this is meant to be a 10 million fundraiser, the social media team behind this are bloody awful. I'd have a 2 hourly Instagram story going, with donation links.
100% 150k raised of 10 million is 0.015% of his goal ? One or two insta stories a day and barely a mention of the fundraiser. So so bad. The whole event would’ve cost so much more than that. Hopefully people donate soon. I gave him $150 last time but won’t be donating this time unfortunately.
At 4 days and 3 hours Nedd is at 590.69km (If I have it right, start time 3.30pm on 3 Oct, current time 7.30 pm on 7 Oct, deduct 1 hour for daylight savings)
