Sadie was not eligible for admission to Stanford and had to remove it from her list of options. Her coursework and academic record did not meet the university’s requirements, and she was considered an average student. Hence picking NC State
has stanford raised the standards recently for athletes? I know multiple athletes from out of state that got into stanford with much worse gpa than that back in the late 2000's/early 2010's
I would also imagine Stanford was an option for Engelhardt. CA kid, so plenty of chance to talk.
Stanford can be academically flexible if you are a once in ten year recruit.
SE gets flack on here, but had Hedengren not had such a huge sr year, Sadie was the top recruit from that class. Her 2:02/4:27/Woodward Park XC record puts her on the all time great discussion. Even with all the legends, she would have been Stanford's best ever distance recruit.
You must have inside knowledge of stanford XC program to make such a claim. Did the Sanford coach say no we don’t want you to Sadie Engelhardt, chase Jane Hedengren instead, and only finish second behind BYU?
I came from an IVY special admin within, but Stanford is the same. Stanford doesn’t just look for a high GPA from soft classes even for top SA! they look at what’s behind it. Their top recruits are usually taking multiple AP or IB classes in real academic subjects: AP Calculus AB/BC or IB Math Analysis AP Physics, AP Chemistry, or IB Biology HL AP English Literature and AP English Language AP U.S. History, AP Government, or IB History HL AP Spanish/French or higher-level foreign language courses Honors-level writing, statistics, or computer science That’s the kind of schedule that shows real academic rigor. Taking weighted electives like cooking, health, or intro college courses from a community program doesn’t compare. Stanford’s admissions team sees right through that and they expect even SA to challenge themselves in core academic areas, not just collect easy A’s
