Details are boring but from a 30000ft. view, you believe in big government welfare programs as long as you benefit. Is that correct or not? If so, support me and contact your members of U S Congress and advocate for tuition free public education age 3 to 23 without means testing.
Why did letsrun even need a loan? I could run a website like this from my mothers basement for a few hundred bucks per month for electricity charges. Where did the 80k go?
re rewarding the wealthy, you are only eligible for the relief if you have paid for 10 years and started off owing <$12k. it is not people with big loans who went to graduate or professional school. spare me.
the irony of trying to make this into class warfare is "your" supreme court got rid of loan relief proposed 2 years ago that was based in part on whether you got a pell grant. you do not get a pell grant unless you're poor. giving those people $10k in forgiveness more was the very thing scotus did away with.
re the forgiveness doesn't help people go to college -- no, the loans did. it is a question of how much and how long to saddle those people with that debt.
to be clear, these are government loans. the government -- and that is what joe is right now, like it or not -- is then deciding how much return it will demand. this isn't reducing or negating chase or capital one's debt. we elect the government. can't we-as-government decide that all the government needs is 10 years, which IMO is a rough approximation of a payment one time of the principal?
i don't think the right gets that as a matter of numbers and numeracy 10 and 20 year intervals are roughly 1 or 2 times principal payment. how big a chunk of flesh does the right want?
it's also amusing the pro-business folks are ignoring that this sort of decision redirects the money from the government to people spending on private sector things and generating economic productivity in some other sector than finance.
Community colleges cost very little. They are subsidized. State schools are typically subsiddized at about 50% from tax dollars. So your preference to have schools be paid for is already an option for many people if they are not wealthy and they choose a subsidized option. The real problem in the US is that kids choose schools that are very expensive and then they compalin later about how much money they owe. I know many kids who go out of state to schools that cost double just becuase they cross state lines. I have asked several parents why the chose State College A over State College B and the answer is that they like the idea of telling people that their child is not at the in-state school. It somehow sounds more impressive.
you're ignoring the opportunity cost of going to juco instead of say harvard. you're judging this just as a matter of expense. if you have any business experience you understand that revenue also matters. who do you think gets the better job coming out, juco joe or harvard harry? exactly.
this argument is better made in the middle. like is it worth it to go to an expensive but mediocre private school. but elite vs. open-enrollment is not even a real debate unless you are fixated on one side of the balance sheet.
i also think you're ignoring quality of education and the effect on your abilities and life. i helped my mom with juco classwork. as a former HS gifted student i found it easy, and it didn't make me engage the material. i kind of want college that makes me work for it. that makes me smarter and a better thinker. or is this just a credential dispensary on the way to a career? yeah, then save your money, get your 60 credits, then dutifully transfer to a 4 year state school, and do 60 slightly harder credits. you will come out pretty much like you went in. and when you have a difficult work task hopefully "original you" knew things.
last point but enough of life is showing up and going through motions. i do not blame people for picking choices like sports and other aspects of a school that round them out and make the educational process less like a factory clock in clock out. you already face decades of that once you get out. have some fun with it.
This authority to cancel student loans was given to the president by Congress during the Trump administration in the pandemic. The Supreme Court, however, was afraid that Democrats would gain from it and banks would lose when the many workers crushed by student loan debt caused by out of control university administrative costs were relieved of those costs so that they could start families, buy houses, and live the American dream their college-educated parents were able to do when college was affordable.
Is it like trump bribing the wealthy through tax reforms he passed?
The Guardian, link below wrote:
They were billed as a “middle-class miracle” but according to a new book Donald Trump’s $1.5tn tax cuts have helped billionaires pay a lower rate than the working class for the first time in history.
last point, but when you glibly say "but the kids signed up for this".....
a) did you explain to them that $30k in loan really means more like $80-90k with interest over decades? and isn't that the sort of computation ONE GOES TO COLLEGE TO LEARN TO MAKE?
b) and you're asking an 18 year old to make that decision. we don't let them rent cars, drink beer, or take out credit cards. but student loans, sure.....
Yeah 18 year olds are stupid. You however vote for the party that wants to let all kids under 18 have sex changes without their parent's consent though. If kids are so stupid at 18 and can't understand a loan, then they should be allowed to vote.
Community colleges are cheap and great in theory. In practice, they have very low standards in the classroom and students have a substandard education that gets much worse when you see that their graduation rates are abysmally low compared to four year non-profits. So, you don't get much for what you pay there, despite the low input cost.
The official in charge of Covid relief tells NBC News' Lester Holt that programs like PPP were structured in ways that were "an invitation" to fraudsters.
How the FLOCK can you bribe me with my own damn money?!!?
To Leftists, aka most of this message board unfortunately, your income and wealth are property of the federal govt and we should be thankful that they let us keep some it. Letting us have more of our money that we rightfully earn and having less of a tax burden is blasphemy to Leftists as they want their Uni-party govt monster in DC to have as much money as possible.
My wife runs a small medical practice with 5 employees. (real work not some unnecessary website) and she managed to get through with a small 10K PPP loan.
the average 4 year school completion rate is like 60%. the average juco completion rate is like 40% over 6 years. that's 6 years to finish 2 school years.
mind you, i'd expect that a strong student would have it for breakfast while the weaker ones probably make up the 60% that don't finish. that and the low cost might allow you to do more hours a year and speed it up even more via summer school.
but my point was cost-benefit, value added. even a school that is meh ROI might give a good education that makes you a better citizen and worker. or be a fun place to go. i think a lot of this discussion is folks increasingly think of everything in dollar terms. basically since about 1980. there are other metrics and values.

Now take it easy on him. It’s not easy finding the right balance for the 100+ supplements that he takes daily. He’s just a little out of whack in the brain acuity functions. Maybe short of of the omega-3 fatty acids?

I'll live happy knowing I'm on the side that's for personal responsibility with finances, against the gay/trans agenda, and not actively participating in the demise of America. You fools responding to me however are captured by the spirit of the age and are manipulated into supporting anything that the media bombards you with without the slightest bit of a moral compass.
I also love how you fools never criticize the source of why college is so expensive and why it has such little value to most students. Your minds are absolutely captured by your political overlords, you've freely given up all ability you were born with to think critically.
