People forget that back then middle distance runners competed at the top level at both 800m and 1500m
Find a runner nowadays who could win Olympic gold over one distance and set world records over the other
He ran his 3:30 1500m world record when slightly past his best and I cannot remember him ever really going for a time in the 800m. Even just adjusting for the shoes/tracks that 3:28 minimum
His main weapon though was his kick over 200m and even in slower races you don't see anything like that at the moment. They are all strength type runners
