Parker Valby of Florida destroys the indoor NCAA record in the women's 5000m at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Valby clocked a 14:56.11 becomi...
Valby's ceiling is unknown. Tuohy is just another young phenom who fizzles out. Check where Frerichs, Coburn, Schweizer, and Monson were in high school. Check what happened to Cain and Ping and Effraimson.
Holy crap, did she make that look easy! (Not to mention that she had to go around about 15 girls in that last K.)
I guess we've settled one big questions now: those of us who guessed she was in something close to 14:50 shape were exactly right, and all the idiots who insisted she wouldn't get anywhere near 15 are, well, idiots.
(And yes, it's very likely that Tuohy was in comparable shape as of a couple of weeks ago.
I imagine she's probably into some major time off now --as Parker's about to be.
If KT stays healthy the rest of this year, she'll break 15 in the spring sometime --whether it's as a pro or not. And she'll probably break it by a lot.)
Tuohy appears to be on a slide over the past 6 months. It is insulting to all of the other great women in the NCAA to keep making predictions for Tuohy that exceed all of the better runners in the NCAA. She lost the 1500. She didn't even race the 5000. She lost XC. Valby has left her behind and her fans aren't willing to admit it.

We have enough Youth, What we need is a Fountain of Smart.
I do think part of what makes Parker Valby so good is that she isn't that smart. Meaning she doesn't overthink running. She's not stressing or wasting mental energy on thousands of other things she is running like a kid who just wants to win.
I also think this is why she comes across as a bit clueless in interviews. Like she really isn't analyzing that much. Works hard yes. But also can go into a weird pain cave where she thinks about absolutely nothing.
Yes and no. Right now she has the better time, but based on the results last year and the 15:03 Tuohy ran in a much less favorable setting/race, I think Tuohy is right there.

Tuohy ran 15:15.92 in the same meet on the same track on the same day one year ago. Rodenfels beat her, running 15:08.22. Olemomoi ran 15:17.97.
Valby ran 14:56.11 this weekend. She beat Rodenfels, who ran 15:03.97. Olemomoi ran 15:17.44.
Please describe this "much less favorable setting/race."

and that has zero to do with the race tuohy ran 15:03 in
Tuohy was fatigued at BU last year. Given what she did at XC and what she ran a few weeks later in the mile and the 3000m (which converts to around 14:46 on the WA scoring table), it was clear that at her peak last year sub-15 was well within Tuohy's range.
Favorable setting? How about the newly resurfaced BU track where two 5000m NCAA records fell in the same meet, Young almost matched the 3000m record and Markezich ran the number 2 all time 3000m time where Valby got to draft off of Rodenfels for 7/8th of the race? Compare that to Tuohy's run on a non-descript track at Trackfest drafting off no one after she had started to wear down?
Where Valby has an odd advantage is that she never seems to fatigue. Ever. Which is strabge to say the least.
Valby ran 20 seconds faster than what Tuohy at this meet last year. Imagine what she will do outdoor in the same conditions that Tuohy ran 15:03. Holy cow.
Just shows how much she has left in the tank. How tired would Monson be had she paced Valby the entire way and ran 14:50? It would have looked like an easy run for her. You are correct by recognizing that Valby has not come close to tapping into her full potential.

I can name a bunch who have beaten Tuohy. Why are facts so troubling? How many runners are you not recognizing? Tuohy was beaten by multiple runners in the 1500. She then didn't start the 5000 effecively last place. She then lost to 4 runners at XC nationals. I can agree with all of those things but you do not which is an insult to the runners that beat Tuohy. You then insult posters for pointing out facts.

I see,1 race result makes them a better runner. ok I love your logic.

You are remarkable. All 6 who beat her in the 1500 just ran in XC Nationals I think. How many beat her there? I will tell you. Zero. So does the result from June determine who in your opinion is better? Or the result from November?
