When it comes to assessing where these women are at fitness-wise, I think the 3000m race could be the tell, if Gorriaran can hold to the 8:48 pacing (and not impede before stepping off.)
Markezich now appears to be fitter (possibly significantly) than her previous 8:50.
For example, if Markezich can squeeze out an 8:43, that’s a 15:09 equivalent (and she was 15sec back of Valby at Natty’s.)
Her result tells me that Valby will crush the record if she runs a 3000 indoors this year
Worth a 14:55 for Markezich in World Athletics points in a 5,000. Again, most NCAA athletes are relatively better in the 3,000 but again just a sense of how much faster they should go in the 5 (and maybe will).

When Schweizer ran 8:41 she was in the 15:17--15:19 range as a 5k PR so it's not a direct line.
Though, Markezich is 23 so maybe she will get closer to peak fitness with the Olympics coming up. I definitely view this as a sign she will be competitive for the steeple team.
How far under Wayments 15:15 CR is she going to go this year?

She ran 15:02 in the summer. She ran 15:19 in a qualifying meet two days after running a 10,000. Not all-out.

The 3000m is Markezich’s sweet spot, but the Natty’s result notwithstanding puts the fitness of presumably more endurance-based Valby ~12 seconds back of Markezich’s Daniels’ Equivalent of 15:04.
This is the most significant indicator to date that, indeed, Valby is currently in low 14:50’s fitness, short of her actually running the time.
Watch some of the top NCAA track and field athletes make their indoor season debuts at the 2023 BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston, MA. Here...
She finished second in the ncaa in the 3000m last season, so this is an event she is very good at.
Yes. Markezich also ran a steeple PR this summer... I wonder where her mile is right now.
After this I wouldn't just assume Valby beats her this season over a shorter distance like 3k (or 3k sc) if she is running like this and can still close in 31s.
