I'm on the verge of being thrown out of medical school. It's a long way on the other side of the country and I haven't even attended any classes due to mental health issues. I want to give it a shot but I also don't want to screw it up and be left in debt.
Other than that I've made a lot of mistakes, mostly small but they add up. It is what it is.
Good luck, man. Hope it works out for you. Hope you can find the assistance that you need.
Have had two people close to me in the last year kind of randomly make a series of almost impossibly stupid decisions that blew up their life in lasting and consequential ways. As someone who knew them well, I have been pretty mystified by it because I can't come up with how anyone could think any of this made sense... It's like they randomly chose to destroy their own life out of the blue.
Anyone see something like this before? What's the story? Why do people do this?
Saw the golden boy of my youth - undoubtedly one of the most genetically blessed individuals on the planet - drop everything in his mid 20s and basically become a hermit.
I knew a similar man who did similar. Resigned from his job, gave up running, converted to is lamb (white guy), married a bulldog old enough to be his mother and surrounds himself with geriatrics.
I think part of it was that he wants to be the centre of attention/the most beautiful one, but it just makes him look weird and like hes wasting his life.
More specifically, acquaintance quit decent job to open a running store. Kept it open for almost two years selling a dozen pairs of shoes a week. Finally closed shop. Lost his house. Couldn't find another job but did find himself divorced for fooling around. Kids mostly despise him. He seems to have landed on his feet but was very painful to watch.
Why didn’t the store succeed, in your opinion?
Local running community was just too small. 5 mile radius there's 120,000 people which sounds good but included two big box sporting goods stores, and two Big 5 Sports all with regular sales prices plus internet was ramping up then. There's a decent D1 track and XC University in town but assume their gear comes straight from reps. The local annual marathon gets a couple of thousand entries so assume he did better that time of year. Even now, I see other runners on the trails but they are mostly running in low end Asics. Town is kind of a blue collar town. There's a couple of big hospitals close to his shop. If he could have lasted till Hoka and ON came out he would have done well with them. Trek and Specialized bike shops in town seem to do well.
Possibly me, to some extent. I was due to go to medical school in 2022. I wasn't ready (mental health problems, money worries) and I eventually lost my place. Here I am at 37 not in medical school, underemployed with two degrees that I have never put to use.
I know of a guy that was a successful music producer. He was making millions but he was throwing crazy pedophilia parties and eventually the word got out. Now he's probably going to jail or be "suicided" by the rich people that attended the parties with him.

I know dozens of people who did great in college, mostly in STEM fields, then went on to enter Ph.D programs. Some of them eventually recovered, but even for them it was like almost a decade down the drain.
Need more information on this. Why was it wasted time?
Had an athlete who was on track to be a consistent top 10 performer on the US roads give it up to join a “pro” team. Little to no progress over 3 years. Karma

Last week I was running down a specific section of woods. Got home and on the news it said the path had been sealed off as someone killed themselves. Police must have arrived 30 minutes after I passed through so it's possible I went past the body. That's happened a few times around here. Life is pretty miserable if you don't have a lot of money or friends or partner especially in this cost of living crisis. We can't all be wealthy americans with six figure incomes.
Except it's usually the affluent who off themselves. Poor people are generally happier.

In 2005 I was in college 23 years of age and had a relatively stupid summer. My college coach sat us down and basically gave us the ultimatum don’t drink this summer focus on running. I of course ignored the rule and not only drank but got a DUI. A childhood friend of mine asked if I wanted to go to his high schools running camp as a counselor/coach with him and told me don’t mention the DUI basically embarrassed by my decision and rightfully so. Fast forward 2007 I join the military; in 2011 I re-enlisted and go to SEAL Training. My running friend comes back into the picture and shows a huge interest in pursuit and going to SEAL Training himself.
October 2011, I drop from training after a series of bad EKGs. 2012/2013 my friend trains and I help him get ready to enlist he does not enlist blows it off and I medically retire/separate in 2015 after a heart attack during training. 2017 he knocks a girl up to trap her I know this because I know him. In 2018 he is kind of on the run from child support that he can’t pay. 2022 he reaches out to me and my wife desperately wanting to get his life back together I reach out and talk to an Air Force recruiter for him who advised he can still join until he is like 40 or something.
He tells me he can’t join the Air Force because of some reason I find out the dude owes a house payment in child support for a kid he never sees. He also had a recent relationship with some female that had multiple kids in which he told me he was living the dream, he does have to work sits around all day and she works. I said that is all good until she kicks you out which sure enough happened late 2022. His mom gets him a job he tells me he doesn’t want to do it because it doesn’t pay nearly as much as he thinks he is worth which is around what I make according to him. I am college graduate with 3 master’s degrees and make well over 6 figures so does my wife but yet he thinks he is just as qualified with zero work experience and zero education, and zero qualifications. He was also recently arrested for threatening people in public and now he is homeless.
So yes, this guy has not only blown up his life he has absolutely annihilated it. Lastly, he wanted to live with my wife and I and stated he would do random house chores if we paid him $500 a month. I said no I am not going to pay you to live at my house and eat my food, use my electricity, and just be a bum, I would rather use the $500 on something more beneficial like Keno or something. He also insulted my wife by saying while I work, he can hang out with her completely misunderstanding the fact that my wife works at the same place as I do and makes nearly six figures herself.
It is not that I dislike the guy I am just beyond disappointed in who he has become. I had originally even tried to help him and wrote a contract that stated if he comes to my home, he will complete his college education and pursue an internship with my employer with the end goal of having a career and he refused to sign the contract stating he is more interested in an action-packed career, as in he still thought he was going to be a SEAL at nearly 40 years of age. The idea of me offering to help him this big with zero expectation in financial compensation from him and him refusing just infuriated my wife and me. He is more interested in make believe then the possibility of a fulfilling career that he would make at least $75K after his internship and with hard work and motivation $100K+, not too mention my career has great hours typically off at 2pm and every other Friday or Monday off.
