If they think the balloon might have biological or other weapons making them afraid to shoot it, are we just going to sit and watch till it runs out of fuel and potentially lands on US soil? How’s that better?
I say we launch some orange revenge balloons into their airspace, and the two countries can then have a passive aggressive balloon diplomacy shouting match keeping everyone entertained.
That's a pretty simplistic statement. Spying is "accepted" in some situations, but most certainly not accepted in others. There are no countries that accept domestic human spies and saboteurs. They often prosecute and jail them (or even kill them). Most countries would not accept foreign surveillance aircraft over their land. They would engage or even shoot them down if warranted.
I think you're attempt to claim the Biden administration is just following accepted international practice with it's decisions on this Chinese surveillance balloon are very weak. Why would anyone even make this silly argument that military surveillance balloons invading sovereign airspace are "accepted?" Weird.
dude take a look at foxnews.com. It's balloon talk 24-7. Fox News is how the rubes get their news and those country folk now are half-convinced that Biden is being paid by China to look the other way while China invades the US. Certainly that crowd is terrified that Biden isn't protecting them. It's all so rote and easy to scare people and that's what right wing media does.
right wing politicians are putting photos of themselves on social media with large guns, pretending to be ready to shoot down the balloon. It's a regular right wing media fest. Even bumped Hunter Biden off the front page! Amazing!
Just a total waste of democracy, right wing media.
Dude, take a look at MSNBC & CNN. I have many "reasonably" thinking liberals who've said the same thing, All Balloon, All Day. I guess I should tell them that they are wrong but some obscure guy on a running forum has the answers.
Firstly, you don't watch Fox News 24-7, you just lied, yet again. For the record, I don't watch Fox New at all---I don't have your strange obsession.
Yes, a total waste of democracy, the left wing media which controls the majority of the news and can bend it how they want.
US should send dozens of unmanned Snoopy1 blimps across China with "Spy Balloon" in big letters on them. China would have to waste hundreds of millions getting rid of them. They would then say how ANGRY they were, because China is always angry about everything.
That's good stuff brother, you should write for a sitcom!!!! :):):) Just got back from a run and I can't stop laughing at that one!!!
So many dolts on this site just reacting to fit their political narrative.
The military analyzed the scenario for shooting it down. There is risk to American lives from the falling debris from the shoot down. And, they determined the intelligence value of the balloon to the Chinese is pretty low (they aren't learning anything they don't already know from spy satellites). Putting those two things together it was a no-brainer to just let the thing float away.
Yea, with all of the spy satellites up there the only reason you would have such a low altitude surveillance balloon is to cause the type of discord you are seeing now. #HmmmBiden!
Alan
You're not putting much thought into this at all if you can't come up with a list of compelling reasons that a country would want to augment their satellite surveillance at 200-300km with some low level surveillance at 15km. You really think China went to all this time, expense, trouble, planning and money to launch a balloon and send it over the US in the hopes it would sow some domestic discord for a news cycle or two? #HmmmFarfetchedtheories!
If this balloon is Chinese, then they can send another 1000 if they want to, and it costs them about 5 bucks to make each one. Accept it. US spies too, tit for tat.

It's a lot more expensive than you claim to design, manufacture and operate a military surveillance balloon over thousands of miles.
I agree that the Chinese may very well feel now that they can launch and maneuver more surveillance balloons across the US.
I don't know what your comments about "tit for tat" have to do with anything. This isn't a debate about whether to throw beer cans on your neighbors lawn because his dog pissed on yours. It's a question of how best to preserve national security being threatened by significant foreign enemy.
I read it is at 60 Thousand feet Altitude, so I doubt a bullet from a gun could hit it and bring it down, but The Military must have Missiles that can get it down, not sure why they have not?

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has postponed his upcoming trip to China in response to the flying of a suspected Chinese spy balloon over the United States. Follow for live news updates.
Thanks I just read that on Twitter, I knew the USA had to have something to get it down, they said they waited until it was over the Ocean so nobody would get hurt.

Yup, they found safe airspace and restricted civilian craft from the area so they could do it.

Thanks, Biden!
I'm an expert on everything, and this was the correct decision.
Unfortunately, not a completely happy ending to the ballon story.
Breaking: 6 local conservatives in South Carolina have accidentally shot themselves in gun accidents while attempting to shoot down the Chinese balloon.
