I was on a couple of clubs which, if this would have happened to one of our runners, the offender would have been dealt with in future races and likely repeatedly. It doesn't take fighting in the parking lot to really make a guy like this miserable.

The victim should sue him for assault. Also, the pri** is lucky he didn't do it to the guy who finished ahead of those two in 3rd. He looks pretty buff and mean.

It looks as though there’s a tangle of arms first that throws the offender off balance, which then results in an unintentional ‘hip-check’. He was 100% moving across to close the gap though, and the manhole cover excuse is bs.
Mods, please stop deleting references to "Gobble, gobble, MF". There have been at least 3 posts with this famous retort that LRC is known for that some over sensitive frittata keeps wiping out. This isn't Reddit.

Then have you reached out to the victim, his training partner or his father (all of whom can be messaged with info on here) to help him out after this dick move by the offender?? He was DQ'd already. All this "I would do this....I would do that" hot air is useless and plentiful on the boards. If you have the knowledge please suggest what you would do, or get a hold of someone and offer to help him, it would be pretty simple. Everyone is saying to 'sue' someone....have charges been filed? Is anyone planning on filing charges? Has anyone on here with specific legal knowledge offered to help 3rd place guy proceed with anything more? If anyone does, help the guy out.
DQ and a 2-3 year ban from the event should be the punishment for that move.
Exactly what I was going to say. DQ and ban of some kind along with a major talking to. This is some of the worst race behavior I have ever seen. If other dude has any injuries at all he should sue. Unbelievable.
I wonder how often impeding the path of other racers happens in other sports like cycling and speed skating, etc.?
I know that it does, and from my experience in those sports, stuff like this is very rare in running, but the equivalent stuff happens all the time in other sports.
And I believe that is to the credit of the sensibility of runners to not interfere with their competition. But it does happen more in other sports, and a lot more.
I only raise the question because the offender is said to have a soccer background, and because while this is really taboo in running, the same kind of thing wouldn't get the same amount of attention in those other sports.
Salvador here. I’ve had fun reading the thread but it’s not complete without my account of what happened.
First of all, I’m immensely proud of being a BIPOC Ivy League grad and the current work I do for the American people as a Senior Consultant at Booz.
Not to mention that all the while I have been training and have worked my way up to someone with potential for the Oly Trials Thon.
As far as the race was concerned, it was a strong race for me, and I was coming in FAST towards the finish line.
The tangent had me veering to my right, which I did, and unfortunately made contact with a slower runner behind me. After I finished yes I did stop my watch. I have a Strava reputation to uphold that needs the data from my specific watch.
As far as making contact with the runner behind me, if one refers to the rules of the road as it rates to vehicular travel, in the event of a collision, the vehicle behind is the one that is liable.
In this case, as the faster runner, I was in front, and the other runner was behind. Therefore he is at fault not me. That’s just me looking at the matter objectively. I personally do not fault the other runner nor am I upset with him and wish him the best in his running and in his life.
One of the worst parts of this is that he blames the manhole cover for going right. When you look at the YouTube video you can see him turn his head multiple times well before that. This had nothing to do with the manhole cover.
He actually doesn’t start running hard until after looking back at the guy. Then he’s determined to impede his progress. The YouTube video is way worse than the original Twitter video.
Not claiming accountability for the incident I think is just as bad if not worse than the incident itself. If he did that, and owned it, instead of making an excuse, I don’t think the feedback would be as bad.
