Seniors Juan Chantaca and Rory Catsimanes, along with junior Brett Ephraim of San Clemente High in California all placed in the top seven of the Division 1 boys senior/invitational 3-mile race at the 48th Dana Hills Nike Invi...
San Clemente is trying to make NXN this year. if great oak chokes at state like they did at Firman, they definitely have a shot to qualify once they lessen the gap
I don't know the SJ section well, but the biggest surprise is the sophomore Burr's 3rd place, only 1 second off of 1st place and beating some very good runners, including Whitney's 2nd man by 50 seconds. Whitney has a strong 5, but their #1 and #2 didn't seem to run as well as in earlier races. The team times of Whitney and Folsom where only 13 seconds apart, making them much closer than I had previously thought. Jesuit had the best 1-4 I believe, but the drop off to #5 was huge, and I don't know the team well enough to have an idea if there is anyone on their roster who can make a significant dent in that. I still find it hard to rank these top 3 teams compared to all of California because I don't see a race where went up against either strong central or southern section teams. I assume the Clovis invite will help clear that up.
CCS and NCS underclassmen talent showcase at the Westmoor Ram invitational today. Keep an eye on the Bay Area SCVAL crystal springs center meet on October 4th. Lots of NorCal talent (Morgenfeld, Soobrian) will be running on a historically established course. Crystal spring invitational should be later in October too, which should hopefully have a number of fast runners from CCS.
San Clemente crushed it. Dana hills returns 5 varsity guys for next year
great oak JV ran in this
San Clemente looks like they could challenge Great Oak for a NXN bid.
Good win from the junior Jayden Hernandez. In second place was a sophomore Griffin Kushen, and oddly enough they finished with exact same time at Woodbridge of 14:30.6.
Elsewhere in southern section, the Raider Invite was won by sophomore Eamon Gordon, who ran 14:40 at Woodbridge.
Crescenta Valley is definitely a top team, but still a bit of a mystery since I haven't seen their full squad matched up against other top teams. Another thing to look forward to at the Clovis invite.
Do you guys think it was just an off day for the Great Oak boys at Firman? With the summer time trial that they had (compared to last year), and how close to Granada they were last race, and being the #2 CA there (without NP) it seems like they should have gotten top 2 in this Firman meet, not losing to so many unranked Utah teams. But regardless, I think this team is going downhill after this year. The gap between San Clemente’s 3-5 at Woodbridge was larger than it was yesterday. If that closes, San Clemente should go to NXN (at least with an at-large) especially if Great Oak blows it at state like they did yesterday. Great Oak and San Clemente are both D1 so San Clemente can try to win D1 state. Newbury is in D2

Clovis Invite should help for sure. Burr was strong last year so not much of a surprise for me. Since they went 3.2 miles it’s hard to use the times to factor them anywhere.
Anyone know how San Clemente got so good? Last year was their first state berth in 32 years. Was it a new coach? New culture? New training philosophy? They are still pretty young this year. Only 3 seniors on varsity. Next year they return: 14:40 (11) 15:03 (11) 15:13 (11) 15:33 (9) 15:41 (11) Also a current soph who ran a 10:07 in the 3200 in track but has yet to run a XC race. So they will have decent depth next year, so they will be around.
With Great Oak and Newbury Park going downhill with new coaches, are we gonna need to expect San Clemente to reload year after year and compete for an NXN berth on a yearly basis?
San Clemente speed ratings 175 174 174 170 163 Solid top 3. If their 4/5 step up, it will be hard for Great Oak to beat them, and they could possibly get ahead of Granada in the merge.
Granada speed ratings from Woodbridge 179 178 170 169 168
Great oak SRs from Woodbridge 175 175 173 168 166 GO’s Firman SRs aren’t posted but I sure think they won’t be pretty. Look how young Dana hills is this year Take the seniors out and the result doesn’t change much.
GO’s speed ratings from Bob firman were very sad. There were some JV seniors that had better speed ratings than their 6th and 7th. Those JV seniors will still be challenging for varsity spots and take them from the juniors. Good way to end their high school careers

The Ram invitational had the interesting matchup of last years #1 Cal freshman 3200m Pretre (by far) against the #1 Cal freshman 1600m Hedlund (also by far). But Pretre has not surprisingly been much better at XC, in particular a stellar 184 Tully speed rating at Woodbridge, but also winning the Ram invite by 22 seconds.
There are so many very good sophomore runners this year I might try a generate a list of approximate speed ratings before Clovis, and then see how that compares to actual results. Big shout out to TullyRunners for doing so much work on speed ratings, and doing about as good as job as possible given the difficult data sets to do comparisons against.
TullyRunners ranked Cameron Rhone's Nike Portland 3rd place finish with a 188 speed rating, which is better than Parra's 4th place finish at Woodbridge at 187. Parra was also at Portland and finished 7 seconds behind Rhone with a rating of 186. Rhone's 188 is significantly higher than his best rating of last year of 173, so good for him to make the big jump to the upper tier of CA runners.

I see that some juniors were close to Parra. Nice soph performance by Carsten Williams. Next year he’s gonna lead Trabuco Hills to NXN probably. They return every single one of their scorers.
Golden Shoe Showdown 2021 - 2 mile times Caudillo - 9:50 Avila - 9:51
Golden Shoe Showdown 2022 - 2 mile times Clovis top 5 times 9:13 (Caudillo) 9:33 9:38 9:42 9:49 Looks like 5 Clovis guys ran faster than Caudillo/Avila did in this race last year. Is this team winning D1 state now? Seems like every team is challenging Great Oak now.
California\'s top high school cross country teams remain atop our list but there\'s a bit of movement below them with three weeks of data to work with.
