I don't like crowds either, but I have spent a lot of time in big cities because I like the attractions on those cities. (Mostly art and history museums.) Having said that, I'd much prefer smaller cities.

1. East St Louis - by far.
2. Detroit - wandered off from the downtown.
3. Chicago - toured UChicago, wandered off from Hyde Park and got into a bad area.
4. Baltimore - the half marathon goes through trashy areas (public housing that’s rife with litter), and it’s also abandoned close to downtown.
5. Portland/SF (tie) - overrun by homeless
Williamstown is great. Beautiful scenery and a quiet feeling; it was also perfect for my runs when I toured. I ran through campus a bit, did a few loops on the track, then headed down toward the school and ran on their grass fields
