Mary Cain Becomes a Pro Triathlete, Claims She Could Probably Have Been a D1 Swimmer

This is horrible. Do you really think you know what you're doing at 18? Her parents saw her training with one of the perceived best coaches on the planet & she probably wasn't able to voice her uncertainty until it was too late. Salazar emotionally abused her. She asked him to start coaching her again? He ruined her and made her think there wasn't another option. We do not need a victim blaming defense of all of that. It is well documented what kind of a person Salazar is. How can someone even say something like this?

Crazy. I didn’t even think of that. She has a coach? Who in his right mind would coach her? Maybe he only gives online trainings with no actual communication with her.

If not, there is one born every minute I guess.

23rd today, decent swim and run, needs to work on bike

She ran 18:36 for 5k. at least she broke 19

her transitions were also very slow

winner had a T1 of 1:11 (Mary 1:31) and T2 of 43 (Mary 1:12).

The winner also ran the 5k in 18:23.

So assuming that Mary had swam and biked as fast as the winner (she was not close, but…), then she would have had to run 17:33 to win (given her slow transitions)

note: the fastest run was a 16:58 (Betya Beard who was running for Oregon State last year - 16:01 PB) who came 3rd overall

She was hoping to earn her pro card? Not even close. Theses athletes are seriously fast and she will not even do as well as Webb. If she wants to complete in a great sport then triathlon may be the answer but she will never be elite.

Does anyone know what Cain can run for a solo 5k right now?

You need swim and bike fitness for a fast run. Otherwise, you are trashed on the run. Even then, you have to manage your effort so you don't blow up. You'll never see a fast run after you max out on the first two events unless you have swim/bike fitness-just the way it is. She can get there. Perhaps bike was too much.

She will get a lot better quickly. First year of tri's always a comedy of errors. Open water swim vs lanes in a pool, what do I do when I get kicked in the face and then someone swims right over me, can't see goggles are fogged, cut foot on a stone running into transition, now can't find my bike, wetsuit zipper stuck, bike shoe won't clip into pedal, flat tire, bike won't shift into low climbing gear, no idea of biking skills and protocol, slide out and crash on wet pavement, and finally heavy barrel legs for first 400m of run and finding out halfway that I still have my bike helmet on. All this crap happens until you get used to it.

She is a good runner, surprisingly as she swam as a kid her skill and technique is there. Biking will improve if she puts the effort in, and transition will improve with experience. See how she performs in Sep/Oct before making a hasty judgment.

She goes again tomorrow, right? I don't understand the two day format but that's what the start sheet is showing.

She will lose interest in this in 12 months, just like she did with her return to competitive track racing.

We let people sign up to go to WAR at 18.

The FACT is that she begged to rejoin Salazar's group just WEEKS before she went public with her allegations against him. She visited Salazar in April of 2019 trying to rejoin the group and continued to contact him into July, then made her allegations against him in October or November. If things were as bad as she alleged, she and her parents WOULD NOT have let her try to rejoin.

Above is the link for the full splits for each of the legs for Mary Cain. Her slow run time isn't is nothing compared to her getting dropped on the bike leg. She can't ride.

Mary proved everyone wrong here who said she cant swim. turns out she can't bike, and burned her matches for the run. The slowest top 25 swimmer, ended up having fastest run split and a decent bike. Luckily batya (#3) was seconds behind on the swim till still draft, otherwise she would have suffered on the bike

This was actually a much worse performance by Cain than I predicted. She got destroyed. The top 4 were significantly faster than her in the run section, which is embarrassing.

The Olympic Tri is a lot longer, which means she'll fall even further behind on the swim and on the bike.

Most of the people that beat her are a lot younger than her. Cain will improve, but so will those athletes.

Letting people sign up for war at 18 isn't a defense of a convicted abuser. Stop defending someone like that.

We actually dk how close she was. You can earn your pro card by finishing top-3 at this race. But there are lots of others ways to earn it too. You can get two elite score ratings. Maybe her score rating will be good from this race. If she finished 25th it must be deeper than years past because her rating from last September would have put her around the top-10 last year.

Maybe 17:30? I don't know how she's training, but when I was involved in sprint triathlon, I could run within a minute of my 5k pr even after the swim/bike. YMMV.
