What's so frustrating to me about this is the fact that so many of our elite athletes have unnecessary TUEs for fake asthma, hypothyroidism, etc. etc. They aren't breaking the rules, right? So all is well... But we all know that what they are doing is far more against the spirt of fair sport than smoking a joint. Rules should only be applied when they serve an obvious benefit and don't totally do the opposite of what they are purporting to enforce. Look up prosecutorial discretion for examples of "rule-bending" in society when things aren't so black and white. Maybe we will see some discretion utilized by USATF.

Can she use a burrito excuse? e.g. "I ate some cake from a shop that tasted rather herbal."

You don't seem to understand the issue it's not whether she gets suspended or banned or nothing at all, the problem is that an in competition positive means she's a DQ and a DQ at the trials means no-go-tokyo even if she wasn't suspended.

Why in the sam hell is marijuana even tested for, much less banned?

Orrrr it could just be because the younger generations smoke weed at such an incredibly high rate that it's not really self-sabotaging behavior at all and is just what everyone does everywhere in all walks of life and it happened to be in her system at the time of testing? I would be surprised if there were other athletes at the trials who didn't smoke weed in the weeks leading up.

Bhang is nothing to worry about. I am sure even some senior people associated with the sport (most sports other than athletics) take it.

As someone said here, if they can ban bhang, they should ban alcohol.

She will get a reprimand and a warning but she'll be there.

That being said, if something like this happens again? Or she misses a test due to negligence or something? Then sure, you might be onto something there with the self-sabotaging thing.

According to USADA, there's no threshold for cannabinoids other than THC and CBD..so any amount triggers a positive. USADA says it may takes weeks to months for the cannabinoids to completely clear your system.

That's truly harsh then.
