Anyone who wins an Olympic medal is a possible doper - including an American. I wouldn't choose to go down that route if I were you.
But as I pointed out, before Centro in 2016 - whose win I consider a "propitious concatenation of circumstances" (a fluke, in other words) - you have to go back to 1972 and Wottle to find an American md Olympic champion. It has been a long time between drinks.
Since then it has mostly been Africans, with the odd Brit or whatever. But the chances of an American without international form (Hocker) winning it this year are pretty slim.
Fine, take doping out of it. Mid-Distance Americans who win the Trials gets results. Clayton Murphy 800m Champ (where was his international form?) --> Bronze. Centro 1500m Champ --> Gold. Manzano 1500m Champ --> Silver. Near-miss by both guys in the 800m race in London. Brazier 2019 Trials 800m Champ --> Gold. Hoppel with no international form nearly gets bronze. Nick Symmonds --> WC Silver.
America is not the UK/Australia which get tons of hype but haven't won a mid-distance medal at a WC/Olympics in 30 years? Yet, we're supposed to think Hocker/Centro are underdogs to Kerr, Wightman, McSweyn and Hoare? Right.
I guess your argument is that the Kenyans/"Africans" are huge favorites. It's a very unproven slate with no PBs better than 3:32, no history of medaling and no Tim. The Moroccans basically are MIA.
In reality, it's wide open and the track record suggests over the last decade underestimating the best American 800/1500 runners is a major mistake.
