I agree! I just turned 65 two day ago, on my birthday I did my lifting and went out and ran my 2.2 mile course at 8;45 mile pace. I was so happy and content because that is what running, ok jogging, has done for me for 50 years now.

For me and many others it’s what keeps us going. So running is for the young, but also the old and anyone else that gets out there and does it.

The opportunity cost to activities like competitive running and other sports can be higher if you’re young or middle aged, there are likely better investments of your time to make your life better later. Cue that ad by the ncaa that most athletes go professional in something else. So I actually think it is the opposite to the OP’s claim, and as we get older (all of us) the experience and health benefits can increase in relative value and competition is an important motivator.

You do have the appropriate amount of hostility for the LetsRun forum, however you are metaphorically getting out of the safari jeep and kicking the lions. Guess what that means, metaphorically speaking?

That's because you've never been a competitive athlete at any age, no matter how hard you tried.

How about a licensing system? Only superior athletes at the height of their powers would be able to run in public, to prevent codgers from defiling our roads and thoroughfares. The elite would be chosen by community boards made of coaches and sports professionals. The license would be an easily visible tag affixed to clothing with simple velcro fasteners. Runners without one would be chased down and fined -- it wouldn't be hard!

Have some compassion, people. Poor Nickyy here, is seriously butthurt over being repeatedly dropped at his local 5K by people 2-3 times his age. The least you could do, is let this him salvage his devastated tiny-ego by trolling some grown-ups on the internet. Please, give this snowflake some safe-space to troll away his wasted potential so he can repair his ego. Otherwise, he'll have to go back to mamma and suck his thumb, muttering something about 'old people taking running too seriously.' It's too sad a thought for me to bear.

In your case, the mockery will always be warranted. If it is "pathetic" for older runners to still enjoy competing it is nowhere near as pathetic as someone who whines at their endeavours because he can't get the point of why they do it.

But yea, it is funny seeing 70 year olds running a 5:30 mile and getting hyped up like they broke 4 minutes.

What's even funnier is that some of you won't even make it to 70 and if you do you'll be just sitting in front of the telly, watching the soaps and dreaming of your glory days.
