I'm pretty sure he was wearing painted Vaporflys. But, hat tip to Wejo here: who cares?
What are you talking about?!? The shoes are a HUGE story, and it kudos if it starts being a bigger STORY if that's what it takes for competitors to step up with a viable product.
[quote]runderun wrote:The cameras aren't on his feet...
Well maybe we NEED more cameras on the shoes, because like or not, they ARE an important part of the sport, more so than any time in its history. It is journalistic negligence, ignorance, or idiocy to try and deflect away from the shoes.
runderun wrote:So yeah, as Wejo says all the time, if a brand can't make a good enough shoe (*cough* Hoka *cough*), let your athletes run in whatever they like.
Sure, as long as that is clearly conveyed, because the shoes ARE that important.
The shoe thing was kind of interesting in 2019. Now? It's just boring. The story has been told so many times and it's the same details every time. We know the shoes make a difference, we've all priced that in by now so journalists can just get on with covering the racing instead

No, he was in a blacked out Vaporfly, not an Alphafly.
I stopped the video and stepped it frame-by-frame. It is not totally conclusive, but it sure looks like there are red and green pockets specifically wear the air-pods are located, and you can really see them scrunch down when he puts weight on them.
https://ibb.co/v1KPFsPI'm unclear on this: does it matter that Benjamin Connor was wearing NB? or just if they're wearing Nike?
If somebody can point to that Instagram photo from today, I'd like to see it.
If the journalists actually focused on the most important piece of running equipment (rather than their endless fluff-and-puff, Mr. H), then maybe we would not have to debate what the actual shoes were.

The guy that came in second? Why wouldn't it matter?

Some of actually make shoe purchasing decisions, and we eke out performance information from other sources in making those decisions. The shoes hopefully are not going to just stagnate, while waiting (how long) for other companies to put up a credible product that can compete with Nike.
More competition in performance will hopefully lead to more competition in price.
If the new Peba foam-based Puma shoe podiums in a World Marathon Major, or Asics shoes return in a big way to the Japan Ekiden, then I hope journalists cover it in a major way.

because nobody is discussing it.
Looked like he was in the RC Elite. He came in 2nd. Someone commented it looked like he had trouble walking afterwards. Burnsy said Aliphine left chips on the table. Draw your own conclusions.

When Sara Hall podium-ed at London in the ASICS proto's, the shoes she was wearing in doing so was just as big of story as her grit (my opinion). And now the ASICS shoes are coming to the market. But will they be like her proto's? I'm not convinced. Will ASICS now return to the Ekiden (besides Yuki)? Wish some investigative journalists would get on it.
Also, in the past, LRC has taken a strong stance on doping in the sport. Regarding the shoes, I would like them to support Burnsy's view on shoe regulations, which is: STACK HEIGHT regulation ONLY.
That photo is convincing. Thanks.

Sara Hall finishes second at the London Marathon in a PR, with an amazing sprint finish in the last 400m, at 38 years old after a career of being an also-ran, and playing second fiddle to her husband. And you think her shoes were just as big a story? Sorry, man, you're in love with the wrong things about this sport
Please, spare us the self-righteous spiel? Both were stories.

I like how some of the black paint ended up on his calves.
Is that not an air pod sticking out on the inside of his right (our left) shoe?

This wasn't self-righteous, it was right on. I've been loving cool racing shoes since the late 70s. I know about being a racing shoe geek. And I've watched more than a few races on TV over the years. Now, maybe the camera coverage was just better than average, but it clearly stood out as appearing to be one of the gutsier efforts I've seen. She looked to be in significant pain for a LONG time. And clawed her way into 2nd. And ran really fast....at an advanced age.
To equate her bright orange shoes to her racing accomplishment on that day is just ridiculous. And moreover, an objectively wrong way to describe the post-race coverage.

You can call it self-righteous but the sport dies if the big story becomes the shoes rather than the people actually running. I love running and I want the sport to thrive, that happens through human stories and rivalries, not discussions about tech. It's like being onto F1 because you really like tyres rather than drivers existing right on the edge at 200mph
I'm not into worshiping sport heroes., and I don't so much buy into the "'the sport' is dying", or "what can we do to bring attention to 'the sport'". NIKE already bought that sport, which is entertainment and diversion. At the end of the day, running and exercise is a personal, individual experience.
ON's uniform was hideous. Chris looked Unattached. I guess ON will figure out elite running one day, the same day they figure out their shoes. You need to POP that logo, not make it tonal in the biggest race in UK on the year and no one knows what he is wearing. We all thought he was running in sh!t grabbed from his drawers race morning with no thought. Then again, no one has said ON is a running brand, maybe gym clothes?

Okay, they do appear more like VaporFlys in this photo...(maybe):
https://ibb.co/kqnLhVbOn a side note, has there been any discussion/explanation for that long pointed tail on the back of the shoes?
From Breaking2, less aerodynamic drag with that heel shape.
