Hats off to Mizzou and Burns for keeping it quiet! Great move by Mizzou! Burns has done very well at a few mid-major stops (Loyola-Chicago, Wichita State & Bradley) and was starting to get things rolling at Bradley. Bigger resources and bigger recruiting appeal at Mizzou. I think we'll see good results down the line from the Tigers.

Keeping quiet about Marc Burns,UM. There was nothing to keep quiet about this hire, this is just another lame Mizzou hire. Good Coach, but guess we will get to see what he does in the Majors. Back to sleep.

Great coaches come with all sorts of backgrounds. Some of the greatest coaches of all times learned on the job. It does not matter if a coach has a coaching degree from a university or has taken certification classes, if they don't use what they were taught.
Many Athletic Directors use the university coaching degrees as a first weeding out factor in hiring. In some ways this is good, in other ways it is not. There are many coaches that started before university coaching degrees existed. This does not mean they are bad coaches. Many of these coaches are actually very successful and produce outstanding athletes.
Athletic Directors should (but many times don't) look at the individual coach and how they developed skills over time. Have the athletes improved? Every program has strong and weak years, but overall improvement usually is a decent indicator that the coach is doing a good job.
Also, the AD needs to also consider the support and conditions that the coach has thrived under. Many programs have very limited budgets and thus can't produce national championship teams (can't give full rides to the best athletes). However, did this coach greatly improve the athletes that they did work with?
But, as has been said here many times, at many schools, the people who do the hiring of coaches usually go with who they know, even if they have a lot less experience. Most of the time resumes sent in for openings, barely, if at all, get a glance over by hiring committees.
Thus, the key to getting hired is not what degree you have or what certificates you have, but who you know. If you can't get a paid job, find a major university that will let you volunteer. There have been several examples of volunteer coaches, or GA's, that have gotten good positions after a couple of years. Then go to coaching clinics, certification classes, etc. and get your name out there. Make sure the other coaches know who you are.
The problem with AD's hiring Track and Field Coaches is that the vast majority do not have a background in our sport. So they do not know what to really look for when hiring... They just look at references and major team awards,ect.. They do not know the intangibles.... Sucks

The vast majority of ADs these days have no background in any sport. They are donor relations and business men.
Which ADs would you say really know the intangibles of hiring basketball or football coaches?
And the problem with Head Track coaches hiring other coaches of various events is that...
They don't know anything about other events!
It's sad, but the days of coaches being able to coach every event are gone. The days of Bill Bowerman and Tom Tellez knowing each and every event are pretty much over.
So what you get now is a Sprint coach not knowing anything about distance trying to figure out who is talking BS and who actually knows what is going on. Or a Distance coach who has no idea about throws doing that hiring.

Tim Hall is one of the best sprint coaches in the Nation. That's great for Tennessee bad for Kentucky. Looks like Tennessee staff s about complete all they need is a jumps coach.

Great hire by Tennessee. Can't understand why she kept Glavash. By all accounts he did not do anything with the guys that the previous coach left. They were either all hurt or didn't run worth a crap. I guess throwing some names and being of a certain class gets you places in this business.
