”Why do autocrats and aspiring autocrats, prefer to deal with other autocrats instead of democracies? It's for the simplicity of corruption. When dealing with autocrats, one can make a quick deal which will be beneficial to cronies of both sides. There are no watchdog agencies to oversee the process, no parliaments to debate, no judiciary to investigate and prosecute, no free press to uncover and publicize. It's a personal deal between two corrupt gentlemen and their partners in crime. That's why, for example, the Vučić regime in Serbia preferred to reconstruct the railway with the Chinese and the Russians rather than with the EU. Brussels forces you to make a transparent process, from beginning to end. With the Russians and the Chinese it's a gentleman's agreement on who gets which piece of the cake, and everybody's happy (unless the railway station collapses on your head). When Trump is negotiating with Putin, he behaves in the same autocratic manner - two emperors making a beneficial deal. In this game, Ukraine is a sideshow, and so is Europe”.
