Just 4 guys who had sub 2.05 in previous 2 years in the race.
Prerace rankings from 2015 and 16 and results (no guarantee I haven't missed someone).
Kipchoge (2.3.05) 1st 2.8.44.
Biwott (2.3.51) DNF.
Abera (2.4.24) DNF.
Berhanu (2.4.33) 2.13.29 13th.
Kiprotich (2.6.33) 2.13.32 14th.
Lilesa (2.6.35) 2.9.54 2d.
Abraham (2.6.40) 2.11.42 7th.
Ghebreslassie (2.7.46) 2.11.04 4th.
Mesel (2.8.18) 2.14.37 21st.
Kigen (2.8.24) 2.14.11 17th.
Sasaki (2.8.56) 2.13.57 16th.
Katajima (2.9.16) DNF
W. Korir (2.9.17) DNF.
Simbu (2.9.19) 2.11.15 5th.
I didn't spot anyone else who had broken 2.10 in 2015 or pre games 2016.
I didn't see the race as my wife and I were living in our "Spaceship" at that time during a 7 week road tour of UK and Ireland.
Looking at the results and from what the Aussies said the course and conditions were worth about 4 mins.
Kipchoge won with ease. I imagine his theory was to cruise knowing he was easily the best runner and capable of outsprinting everyone if required. The OG whilst good for his profile was not much good for his bank. He would've been keen to make sure he saved himself for better paydays.
For the 2 sub 2.5 guys who DNFd maybe it was simply a case of either medal or quit and save the legs and then focus on the big $ city races.
Berhanu was the other sub 2.5. He finished 13th nearly 9 mins slower. Did he go with the moves and blow up or did he just tough out an off day.
4 non Africans appear to have punched above their weight on race day, Rupp, Ward, Hawkins and Gillis.
