Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or &quot

I had surgery in October of 2007. I had a recent flare up in June (never lost strength in my lower abs like I did when I originally tore it pre-surgery, just had inflammed kind of pain), but after some time off here and there it seems to be feeling better. I get sore in the area after a workout when I haven't trained in awhile (that's to be expected), but the pain during exercise has reduced with the time off. Actually my stomach feels very very good right now, fingers crossed.

As long as I don't lose the strength again, I feel like any pain is a result of inflammation at this point and just needs to be managed well (anti-inflams, stretching to break scar tissue, massaging, etc)....

I had the surgery with muschaweck paid out of pocket i have the discomfort anyone would have from getting surgery been year and a half and im back to full activity. i just sucked it up did the rehab which was extremely painful and im back doin what i want

I replied a few days ago, but I never saw it appear. The short answer is that I haven't really recovered since I tried playing soccer 6 or seven weeks ago. Before that I was doing great. Now, I can run a bit, but the abdominal weakness and pain have returned. I'm going back to see Meyer's in a week or so.

I sure hope your setback was more temporary.

Well firstly you need to rest your injuries for a couple of months and see if the symptoms return after this! I know it’s easier said than done but physicians would insist on you doing this before they consider your injuries to be anything more serious than strains.

But with this aside, I’m sure that your groin and back pain are linked, it’s an old school of thought now to say that pains in the two areas are not. You said yourself that you are compensating for the groin pain in different ways. If it were hip impingement for example, your legs would have slightly less rotational movement, causing more strain on your back during high force movements like serving. It can also cause the clicking sensation.

Of course your sports med doct could be right and it’s a sports hernia causing the pain in your groin. The reason I swayed towards the hip tho is because of all the other pains you have. After being told I had a sports hernia for 18 months, the first indication my sports med had to this not being the case was when cortisone injections into the groin did not relieve the pain. So perhaps you could follow a similar path. I could not believe that all the pain I was feeling in my groin was because of my hip. But I was just relieved to finally have a firm diagnosis!

Whatever your pains are resulting from, you’re going to regret ignoring them later on in life. My surgeon told me yesterday that people needing hip replacements in their 30s and 40s results from conditions such as hip impingement being ignored or not recognised at a young age. As for sports hernia, well this site is perfect for demonstrating the complications there can be if it’s not treated early!! Hopefully a rest is all that’s needed!!

I've been griping in my last few posts about lower abdomen pain. I really kind of figured that it was upset stomach from gel, my shoes, dehydration, poor stretching, a one time thing, or something of a temporary, solvable nature if I could just identify it, although it sometimes bothered me even when I was not running.

Today while I was at the doctor for something else (not a sports medicine or hernia specialist), I asked about the pains and after some prodding, poking, and coughing, he said that he thought my inguinal ligament had become stretched out, probably because of a small hole that was a natural defect. He said he was pretty sure it wasn't a hernia, but he wouldn't be surprised if I got one in the future. From the very first post in this thread, "dehiscence between conjoined tendon and inguinal ligament" sounds like what he described to me. I could feel how it bulged out more than the other side when I coughed. The doctor didn't think I would need surgery now, but said I should wear some kind of support when exercising. He said there wasn't anything to prevent or reverse it, as my muscular tone was already strong.

I haven't had time to read this whole thread, as it's very long, but even from the first few pages, I could see people were starting to talk about surgeries and specialists. I am not in some of the intense, constant pain that others have described, but a few times now when running, I have decided to stop because the pain was so sharp.

I will continue reading the thread, and I have another doctor's appointment scheduled (with a general care physician, as I made the appointment before knowing the exact problem, I will see a specialist if necessary) but would appreciate any additional advice on what to do now.

How can I make sure that it really is a hernia or sports hernia related problem rather than a temporary muscular problem? Should I stop running until I get some answers? Since I've already stopped so many runs, I'm behind on my training and will have to give up on my fall race plans if I miss much more time, but I would rather do that and heal than aggravate what sounds like a potentially very bad problem.

Did you get any answers to this? I have been diagnosed w/ a left side sports hernia. It's been several years, and it seems surgery is the only course. Ick. I'm in Marin County. Did you find a good surgeon locally? PLEASE let me know. Best,

i had bilateral sports hernia surgeries 2 years ago in germany...still not right, actually my hips/glutes/groin is still bothering me. the groin and abdomen is much better than before, but i know i do have bilateral fai and labral tear on one side (which is the more painful side). i recently began having pains along the outside of the hip/greater trochanter.

i get my 3d ct scan on friday.

i am working on getting in to see meyers to have him look at my groin to see if dr muschaweck missed something (aside from the hips).

i had bilateral sports hernia repairs done 2 years ago. now i finally got diagnosed with bilat fai and a labral tear on the painful side.

i hope to be able to be active again!

There's a new website by a west coast specialist that does a good job of summarizing this injury, and his preferred treatment. Seems similar to meyers in approach. i was scheduled to go see meyers in PA, but due to the fact that brown is only 30 minutes from my house i will be seeing him first for an exam.

he was recommended to me by the oakland raiders team doc. he used to doc for the sharks and has referred many people to brown.

Hi, I am a recovering Bi-lateral pelvic floor repair/ indirect inguinal hernia patient of Dr. Meyers of Philadelphia. This thread was invaluable when I was searching for the cause of my pain (Too the right of my penis- one inch up, abdominal side of the crest of the pelvic region of thigh and abdomen, where there would develope pain and a slight bulge from inflamation, the pain also ran up the inguinal tendon area(Sitting and driving were extremely hard for me to do)). After waiting for about 2 months before I was able to get into the operating room under Meyers after he decided that surgery would be a good idea, it went smooth, as it too was my first surgery. I left the day after, after blacking out when they tried to get me too walk 4 hours after surgery:(

The bill ran me around 35k$, Thank the Lord I am covered under Horizon BlueCross/BlueShield of NJ(PPO), which I payed nothing for the surgery or the MRI! I got home and found the first 4-5 days the toughest, I really just hobbled around the house, 1-2week I was walking well, now Im 6 weeks out, I still have pains that come and go on the right side and a bit of pain at the site of origin, nothing like before the operation though. I started driving around 3 1/2 weeks out and can perform normal stuff around the house without much pain. I overhauled my diet some time before my surgery and got myself off all processed foods sugars dairies and meats(Save fish) and dumped my toothpaste and deoderants for less harsh substitutes, and balanced the PH of my body. I started taking EFA's flax,fish,borage,coconut oils, tumeric, glutamine, catsclaw, burdock root, marshmellow root, Aloe juice, Pea protein(None of that whey,or soy protein) 6 g of C(Bioflavinoids, Esterfied, and Ascorbic Palmitate), E, Coral Calcium and some others to help aid inflammation(Good inflammation) and repair the muscle AND fatty tissue in the area. I know this is an old post but in case anyone is combing through it like I am and trying to decide whether to get cut to fix AP, I thought I'd reply:

I've been to see Dr. Meyers twice in the past month. His waiting room was very very crowded, though he does share it with other doctors. Lots of people were waiting to see him. The first time I was there a bunch of us discovered we were double booked. My appointment was noon and there was another guy booked at that time, as well as two people each booked for 11 and 11:30. I didn't notice any professional athletes. I probably got in to see him by about 1 p.m. as he was running behind. But I'd asked Marcia in advance and she told me to expect to spend as much as four hours in the office.

The second time I went to see him I had an earlier appointment, after getting the special AP MRI done at Jefferson Univ. Hospital nearby. So the waiting room wasn't as crowded. There was a Houston Astros pitcher waiting to see him who actually was complaining that he'd been there for two hours and not been called in yet. They were apologetic, and he got called in shortly before I did (but after a couple other everyday joes). So it doesn't seem that he plays favorites with pros vs. weekend warriors.

I'm in a similar position, osaru.

I went for two rounds of PT and the therapist says he has had patients who have gotten better with rest and therapy, but some patients had to have surgery.

My sports medicine doc, the one who sent me for the therapy and made the diagnosis, says most people need surgery but is advising me to do everything I can to treat it without surgery first.

After two rounds of PT my pain went away. I kept up home exercises, started light workouts again and all was fine. Then I tried to skate. Later that day and into the next, my pain was back. A shadow of what it was at its worst, but back nonetheless.

So now I've been to Dr. Meyers in Philly twice and another surgeon in NJ that my sports doc recommended. Meyers had his people do an MRI and found bilateral rectus tears, and wants to repair them surgically. No adductor release. But the other guy is convinced I DON'T have a sports hernia. He used ultrasound (a technique he says he learned from Dr. Muschaweck when she visited the States a couple of years ago) and finger exam and says he disagrees with what Meyers does and wants me to see an orthopedic surgeon.

I'm really confused and just want to be able to play hockey and work out again.

It's been a year and a half since the pain started, and about a year since it peaked (before I started the PT), and it's pretty minimal now because I'm largely inactive but it still prevents me from leading the life I want to.

Anyone have any thoughts?
