Don’t get me wrong, Zavaleta’s got some pretty legit times, but I think after Clovis he started to plateau a bit and a few bad races (Mt Sac being a good example). Maybe beginning of season, he would’ve been a contender but seeing how his seasons went after Clovis, I’m not too sure. I do think he will state, but I’m not banking on him going to NxN- there’s always footlocker and runninglane tho.
I think Maximo Zavaleta should be more in the conversation for possible NXN individuals. He has the strongest argument to chalk up his Clovis performance to just a "bad race" since he has the 3rd fastest 3200m behind Pretre (who might qualify with his team) and Noonan (who is a wildcard) as well as because of the fact that he had the fastest time out of any Californian at the Woodbridge Invitational.
menlo is not going as a team lol. Have one of the best 1's in the state, a serviceable 2, a good enough 3, and then a 4, 5, and 6, that wouldn't even run for some most top 20 teams in the state. Their 5 and 6 are both young and promising, but won't be nearly good enough this year.

Menlo is very likely to be 3rd best California team based on what they did at Crystal Springs Sections. The contenders are Menlo, Glendora, Matilda Torres (looked very bad at central section though), Oaks Christian and Great Oak. I feel like it's unlikely these teams get at-large because they didn't travel. Menlo it's probably 0% because they went to disneyland instead of facing competition which won't be a good look for the committee
Upon looking at their section meet, they had a kid not run at clovis who ran quite well at sections, and their 5 (4 at clovis, behind the new kid who did not run), improved tremendously. Based on the tully runner scores, they're closer than I thought, although I still wouldn't choose them, they are definitely in the running.

I wouldn't be that harsh on the Menlo results, although I do agree they basically have no shot as is to make it to NXN. A 5th scorer going 16:30+at Woodward Park is going to tank your team time hard.
At Clovis they were missing one of their usual top 5 runners, and another (a freshman) ran above 17 minutes after going sub 15 at Woodbridge.
Definitely tempered expectations from earlier in the season, but all 5 of their guys who scored at CIF Finals would all be scorers or at least top 7 for 99% of California teams.

well to be fair it's not like the other at-large candidates look all that great either

I don't think Rich Gonzalez will care. He seems chill and like come on, this is only HIGH SCHOOL cross country. What matters is that Menlo showed up and mogged the rest of the competition by running the fastest team time.
DII has the advantage of being an individual and team heavy- I’m expecting DII to be pretty fast (maybe not German Fernandez levels of fast, but maybe something atunded to 4-5 Matt Strangio and 2 Josh Bells)

I don’t know where I can find out which teams an individuals are in each division. So can someone please lay out to me who are the top teams/individuals in division 2? Aydon? Griffin??
Saint Francis dynasty is crazy😭. Y’all lost Hayden Owen, Luke Metcalf, Sam Franco, and are about to lose Auge Martin after this year. Who do y’all have left after that? Jesuit and Vacaville on top. Vacaville going to NxN in the next two years easily

Who knows which St Francis team they’re even talking about? Is it St Francis Le Canada? St Francis Mountain View?

There are a lot of St Francis schools out there
No, he’s definitely talking about the Saint Francis Mountain View (CCS) dynasty. The 2017 boys team went to NXN and that whole squad committed D1. And the girl squad probably would have gone to NXN in 2020, if not for COVID. However, they have been better for much longer and will likely finish 5/6th in the CIF merge this week & maybe win Division 2??? since introduction of new coach in 2014, the girls team has qualified for state every year and the boys have only ever missed out twice since. It’s quite the accomplishment for the coaches to create these consistently fast athletes along with a strong team building environment.
