This guy called it 100%. A diversity hire, actually coming from D3. I'm sure he is a very good coach but Yale clearly didn't aim big for someone that can get them great on a nation stage, or even onto the level of Penn, Princeton, or Harvard.
Jaworksi hasn't even coached men in 10+ years.
Cry harder! The man has experience in the Ivies as both a student-athlete and a coach, which obviously counted for something. Exactly what issue will he have coaching men? Didn't sound like it was a problem when he stepped in to assist the Dartmouth men during a portion of their debacle.
Do you say the same for guys who've only coached men and take over a women's program? If it really is an issue- he does have assistants! As for the diversity jab....ain't nothing wrong with a lil seasoning! His hire doesn't change the fact that white male coaches are STILL the majority!
I personally know two candidates that coached there for years with success and have director roles now that never got contacted.
This hire makes sense. This coach can have a positive impact. Diversity definitely matters, especially at a place like Yale, that is only decades removed from being the poster child for “white male privilege only” institutions. Yale has really rewritten that script in an impressive manner.
Ivies mostly tend to hire coaches with Ivy experience. I was not impressed with the “led the women to 23rd place in D3 cross country nationals” as a credential for a D1 job. He had a minute at D1 Dartmouth, but wasn’t that a controversial time?
The truth is, Yale’s track and field record book is at the D3 level. All Ivies are D3s. (Why are they D1 anyway? For men’s ice hockey?) Successful D1 coaches might be too frustrated with Ivy recruiting. Yale hired wisely.

Um, blacks are 13% of the population, they should make up 13% of the coaching staffs, seems about right.

His team got 23rd at D3 nats in his second year there, and they hadn't qualified since the 90s before he took the director job. Anyone who knows Courtney knows that he'll do a great job
Wow, is this thread racist (and frequently sexist, too, although not as much right at this instance). If any job at any level ( DIII entry-level assistant to P5 Director) doesn't go to a good ol' boy 40+ year-old cis het white man and there's (at least) a minority group that feels very okay showing their whole ass (loudly) for several days criticizing the hire. And similarly qualified (or at times underqualified) white dudes frequently don't receive the same level of criticism or scrutiny (and frequently just get attaboys when they're a part of the club).

Did I say otherwise?
If I offended both you and the M A G A boi I guess I haven’t taken sides.
Here:
1. Those of us who thought Yale was a D1 job are wrong. Ivies are really D3. No scholarships. No rabid love of sports teams above academics. 2. Anyone complaining about his soft credentials for D1 (me, at first) is wrong, because Yale has always performed at a D3 level (see its record book).
3. This coach is qualified. Yale is diverse. Track and field is very diverse (for the cowboy in the back trying to quote stats about the general population). Women are 50% of the team. This coach was a decorated Ivy middle distance athlete who made it to the Oly Trials, and he knows how to coach women. 4. At first this hire may seem surprising (me, I was surprised), but further reflection shows it to be a coup.
Haha WOW people are passionate here. Good luck, everyone.

What percentage the track and field population is black? Basketball....Football?

His team got 29th in his first year, 27th in his 2nd year and did not qualify in his 3rd year. They never even got as high as 23rd.
So he qualified with the previous coach's recruits but did not qualify with his own recruits.
This was the same at Dartmouth, he benefited off of Coogan's recruits and Abbey D'Agostino's success (the year before he started) then struggled greatly to build it on his own.
The Ivies are arguably the best non P5 conference so we'll see if he can pull it off. A lot of great coaches that he'll have to compete with.
Probably biggest warning sign is the massive down turn at the end of the Smith college reign. Not as bad as the Jonathan Marcus hire last year at least.
I think people here are pretty quick to jump on any unqualified hire it's not really as much of a race/gender thing. There was a 7 page thread trashing Dartmouth guy.
1 - he is being forced out but they are politely letting him "retire"
2 - they will make a diversity hire for director
3 - With the power 5 likely separating from the rest of the NCAA, this is a good opportunity but likely will not attract any big name coaches from top 20 NCAA teams.

The original question from Wejo was who could this job attract because in his mind it's a dream job. Many Ivy League programs are now consistently in the top 20 at NCAAs in track and XC. It is one of the best opportunities in the NCAA.
They could have tried to steal Kebba or Gibby from Harvard, or Akanno from Penn because he went to uconn, etc.
Or they could have looked for a power 5 Coach. Or at least someone from the top 10 in D3.
But Yale had their sights set much lower. There was no way they were going to hire a white person, no matter how qualified. John McDonnell could have risen from the grave to apply and Yale would have thrown his application in the garbage. No chance.

Hey as a conservative you should appreciate shoving things down people's throats with no consent.

Why are you people so obsessed with people shoving things down your throat?
