how many miles does stauman do a week? I have never really seen a runner like him ever. He has sprinter speed but not sprinter power. He has a distance form most of the race but he doesn't run cross or anything over 1 mile. He is a anomaly. Maybe more schools need to recruit tuba players.
He is an anomaly at this level but not at the international or even national level. He is much like Johnny Gray or KHADEVIS ROBINSON type 800m runner. Also the race at nationals. right or worng it looked like he got cuaght flat footed at the start. From the track side it didn't look like he intended to execute that kind of race plan.
I dont know. i think he basically runs his own race despite what any other competitors do and what his coaches say. sometimes its not the smartest move, but that's how you progress as a runner, by learning. even if its the hard way sometimes

I posted that mostly because I heard a very highly respected and accomplished coach in the PSAC say the same thing to one of his runners at the PSAC outdoor. He simply stated that if he plans on winning an OUTDOOR national title he will have to learn to go out faster to be in position to make a move to win, he said that he does not need to go out in the lead, but be "in contact" with the lead pack at 400. After I overheard this conversation I started to pay more attention and I agree now.

as far as how many miles he does, not sure but I'd guess between 40-50 from what and when I see him running. If I remember I'll ask him, I'm sure you'll all be on the edge of your computer chairs until then.
I wouldn't say that Strauman is anything like a Johnny Gray or Khadevis Robinson. If you add Jonathan Johnson in there, and these three have been the definition of front running in the 800 for the US...taking the pace from the start and pulling the field through in 49 seconds. He is very talented and dominant at this level, but from what I've heard in the past, he does rely a lot on his closing speed.
All he needs to do is continue to do what he's doing, and maybe get a little more used to running in bigger crowds. It can be quite a change after running solo all season, to running with 7 or 8 others that can respond to most of your moves. He's not going to easily run away from the field in an NCAA Final...it's mostly about setting yourself up for the last 150-250. It's not about the time in those races, it's about where you finish.
After flying back East to visit family for a week, I had the pleasure of watching him run at Bucknell on Saturday. It was the first time I ever saw him race, and I couldn't have been more impressed with the outcome. He is very confident, and it was evident that the others in the conference are intimidated by him, while in complete awe as they watched him.
I'd really like to see Strauman get the National Title that he deserves this year, and possibly continue his season in the Olympic Trials. He's a hell of a runner, and while I'm disappointed that I never had the opportunity to race with him...I'm a little happy that I never had to.
Keep up the good work...I'll be watching!

It's true. The Alumni would know better than me but I think it was in the summer of '98 that the coaches had a meeting and decided to add mandatory Fellatiotic warmups and cooldowns for every athlete during the Conference and Regional championships. I almost didn't believe it until I was browsing the online rules manual on the conference website.

Neely Spence will be attending to Ship. U. next year, with their current top 3 frosh xc runners and her, how good can their team be? Also i beleive they are picking up a transfer that ran 22:10 this year

wow--that is too bad. She will be 2 minutes faster than their 2nd runner. I would guess she may be training with the men. I have not been very impressed with their women's team. She needs to let go.
That's a stupid comment, her dad has trained her all her life and it has worked pretty good so far. After being home schooled all her life wouldn't you think it would be easier to transition into college where you know where you are? Then go off to a huge school when you are ready?
You have to think about what's better for the person, not the athete sometimes, maybe she wants to make sure she's ready grade wise to go away somewhere that big, so far from home.
I agree that her dad has trained her great and that she is obviously comfortable with the situation in Shippensburg. If she is planning to stay all 4 years, it may work better for her and the team although she may not run up to her full potential because of the competition in practice and most meets. To just stay for 1 year with full intentions to transfer would really be leading on the team and upcoming recruits--although if they know that up front--I guess it would be ok. Just kinda odd for one of the top runners in the nation to settle for Ship, dad or no dad.

Neely was 4th at FLN, she's going to dominate the PSAC next year.
I'm not being mean or degrading to Weiss at all, but Neely is at a level that Weiss was never at in his high school career. She could be classified with the all time greats like Kim Gal. and the rest of them,
she is 2x state xc champ, 2x regional champ, 8th and 4th place finishes Footlockers ( the most competitive race run in the US for highschoolers ), 4:50 1600 PR 1st at states, 10:16 en rt 3200 to a 10:20 2m PR with 2nd place at nationals.
You do not get much better then that, and that is why she can look at weiss and laugh! haha not really but u get my point.
Is she going to run in the men's race or the women's race at PSAC next fall? She may be in the top 5 for Ship on the men's side. Maybe she can do both and still win the women's side.
