Hamas has been in control of Gaza for 15 years. This attack probably took at least six months to a year to plan and prepare for. Hamas knows full well that when it carries out an attack on Israel, the response is always IDF F16s dropping bombs. Yet, it is pretty clear that Hamas did nothing to prepare the Gaza Strip for this war. And that is probably by design. Hamas wants to have Gazans starve and die in air strikes because they believe that Israel's reaction to their attack will cause all the Arabs to rise up and join together to push the Jews into the sea and take back Palestine. That is because for Hamas this is not a war for the liberation of the Palestinians. It is a war to exterminate the Israelis and destroy the state of Israel. Hamas has no problem letting civilians die in Gaza because they are just martyrs whose deaths will bring about the great united Arab army to snuff out Israel once and for all.
On the other hand, Israel is all too happy to play into Hamas' narrative and is currently bombing Gaza in a way that makes Aleppo look like child's play. It will just be a week or two before there are widespread outbreaks of cholera and dysentery with thousands getting sick and dying due to disease, hunger and lack of medical care. And that will be in addition to thousand who will die when IDF invades Gaza and calls in airstrike whenever a single shot is fired from any building they encounter. IDF could barely handle 1,000 Hezbollah militants back in 2006 and can only accomplish so much with their air superiority. Starving Palestinians in Gaza is only going to cause Hezbollah to attack from the north and possibly have Syria or Iran support those efforts covertly or overtly. Israel thinks that its nukes will keep other Arab states from intervening, but that may be a big miscalculation.
fascinating question if the Israelis will fall into the trap you describe. I have to think after watching the Soviets flail in Afghanistan and Ukraine, the Americans flail in Iraq and Afghanistan...that the Israelis will know urban combat in that setting is a deathtrap and wont' let themselves be stuck in a quagmire.
And the corollary: I hope the Israelis won't simply decide to carpet bomb a new dmz of 5 miles around the border. But they might.
