Don't be so sure. I've worked both D1 and D3 for a long time. Including 2 P5 D1 jobs. Yes the very top end jobs do pay more, but I make way more now as D3 head than I did as P5 D1 Asst. The recruiting is easier for the top 1/3 of P5, but do you think Wake Forest and Illinois and West Virginia are getting the kids over Florida, USC and Texas? Won't even go into the recruiting for mid-major bottom feeders like a Louisiana Monroe, Western Michigan, Winthrop, North Alabama--those schools having a cake-walk getting top-end kids? Go back to school, youngster. You're perception isn't reality

You are comparing head to assistant. Compare same job titles. And yes I would much rather recruit at a West Virginia than a d3 in Ohio or wherever. Last I looked West Virginia still gets some good talent.

Here are three truths about employment that you must digest:

1. The Most Qualified candidate does not deserve the job.

Minimum qualifications, preferred qualifications, and essential job duties are written and published for these jobs. Minimum qualifications need to be met. Preferred qualifications (e.g., speaks Spanish, or coaches linear jumps) may explain why one candidate is chosen over another. No explanation is due, though. Essential duties has to do with the ADA and making reasonable accommodations for non essential job duties (e.g., lifting hurdles ).

Thank all the people who have been discriminated against in hiring for these distinctions. If you’re wondering why white males are not favored in these practices, it’s because white males have enjoyed privilege in the job market for decades (centuries). Any limits now may feel like discrimination to you.

So the candidate who has been an Olympic athlete or who has coached a few national champions does not DESERVE the job. The candidate who can do the job and has the it factor to do what needs to be done for *this team, *this year, *given the existing staff gets the job.

2. Track and Field/Cross Country coaching is a sh!t profession for women who reproduce.

Women with a lengthy list of qualifications aren’t applying to jobs? Blame the profession.

Regardless of how awesome dads are at raising kids, TFXC coaching - especially at the D1 P5 level - sucks big time for families with young kids. The overnight travel is the biggest problem. It helps to have a nanny or a parent who doesn’t work, or a grandparent available constantly. Find exceptional female coaches all you want, yes it can of course be done, but the fact remains women are not entering or continuing on in this profession.

That’s why entry level female applicants are getting the jobs for women’s sports.

3. Being coached by someone who understands us and can motivate us does matter.

Bitter about female and minority coaches getting jobs? Gee, I want YOU to be my coach. White male coaches who get it? We will go into battle for you.

Okay now try this: make ALL the TF/XC coaches across the land black women. All your coaches at every level, in every event group are black women, no white Chads anywhere to be seen. You white bros happy with that scenario?

Those of us who are not white guys want to have at least one staff member around, to talk with, to represent in team decisions, even if it’s not our event coach. Administrations who understand this make efforts to hire a diverse staff. This also helps greatly with recruiting, if recruiting someone other than a white male is relevant to the university.

Please tell us why one of the most successful college coaches in the NCAA, Ray Treacy, should have hired you over his volunteer coach, who also ran for him, who he recruited and has known for close to a decade? Why would you be a better assistant to Coach Treacy?

And for all others crying, plenty of white dudes (qualified or not) all over the place in the NCAA. Especially as directors.

Was anybody this upset when Trevor Dunbar was hired as a P5 (2x!) this year? I’m sure he’ll do fine, but what was his resume? A year as a non-countable GA at FSU? Would you consider him more or less qualified than the Providence hire?

Anybody going to be upset when Jake Hurysz lands another D1 job?

New distance guy at Dartmouth is a white D3 coach.

Plenty of landing spots. Don’t despair. But if you’re going to be this irate over female hires, you may not be long for gainful employment in higher education...

Ok when I was a HC at D1 mid-major I made 72. HC at D3 over 100. I understand that's not typical but at the mid-major level you'd be surprised by what the coaches make. P5 a different story but job security not great and 1/2 assistants making less than 60.

West Virginia does get some good talent, but not so much relative to the competition, They aren't a competitive team in the conference (2nd to last at Big 12) or Nationally (2 total qualifiers to prelim).

Here's a D3 in Ohio--Mount Union--they have better marks on TFRRS in 1/2 the events than WVU. They won their conference. They were top 25 at National Meet. So is recruiting about getting a better kid or is it about getting a better kid relative to your competition?

My son was a junior on the team when the highly successful coach took another job at a bigger school. To place the blame on my son is another SCUMBAG move, but what else would we expect from winny the bish?

You don't speak any truth. A coach has a huge amount of responsibility for the well-being of their athletes.

I consistently see experienced male coaches that have coached numerous OLYMPIANS miss out on jobs to inexperienced women with no full time coaching experience. Anyone ok with that needs to be brought to a mental institution.

If you want to work with the best talent then you go D1 for 99%. You know West Virginia doesn’t do a full rounded program like mount union does so comparing all events is not a straight correlation. If it did it would also dominate mount union if it tried to do the other event groups. Compare the events West Virginia actually worries about. Who cares about being top 25 d3 or winning conference? In any conference it’s usually a dogfight between 2-3teams and the rest are just also rans. Do you want to work with and devlop elite talent or just be good compared to others of a similar rank?

And again you can’t knock off power 5 when talking about D1 salaries. Because when most say D1 they mean power 5.

You just exposed yourself as an inexperienced and insecure coach. Take it from someone who's been at both levels--the job is the same whether you're working with someone who ran 10.10 in high school or 11.10. You help them get better, grow and have a good experience. The rest is just ego BS.
