I think a lot of people aren’t clear on what a political party is. It’s a non-governmental group that has decided to pool its votes to win elections. It can choose its candidates in any way it wishes.
in fact our system of primaries is fairly new. Parties used to choose the prez nominees at conventions and whatnot. No primaries at all.
arguably that was better, since our primary system is absurdly long, expensive and selects the best salesmen, not the best statesmen. And the radical people show up out of proportion and choose the radicals like trump.
But anyway, nothing wrong in a party choosing its prez nominee.

well 'brokered' usually means that at the convention there were multiple rounds of voting. Sometimes, yes. Most times the delegates coalesced around a single predetermined nominee and that was that. No primaries, one round of voting at the convention.
Usually the party selected its nominee early on and there was no competition.
For 60 or so years we've had primaries...not necessarily better. Having people select a person capable of doing the job seems better than selecting trump, who failed miserably, yes?
