Friend and neighbor, just got back from dinner and beers, and this guy tells me he saw Bowie in the early 70s, along with, get this, just about everybody.
He worked at a well known music venue in the early 70s when he was in high school and saw show after show. I start asking if he saw ____.
He's seen just about all of them, and with personal anecdotes, etc.
I was falling out of my chair, losing it....
Everyone I would name with few exceptions - he saw them.
Off the top of my head, Ramones, Debby Harry and Blondie, Patti Smith, Chrisy Hynde and the Pretenders, Psych. Furs, Asleep at the Wheel, Sting and the Police, etc, I can't remember them all, but just about everyone I could name. Iggy Pop, John Prine, Bonnie Raitt, Waylon Jennings, Doc and Merle Watson, and more.
He said 3 to 4 shows a week for 4 years.
Still can't believe it.
How cool is that.
Known the guy for 25 years and he never mentioned it.

And the neighbor/friend - no never mentioned, straight out of the blue. Remembering other bands he said - Genesis,, Bruce Springstein, and others!
He had some anecdotes about interacting with some of them, too. Unloading a van with this Brit from the Police that turned out to be Sting. Setting up portable heaters with Debby Harry so her band could perform when the heat went out. Finding some "stuff" for a certain guitarist that had a liking for such things.
Cannot believe it!

The Cellar Door (and the Bayou) were the main live music venues in Wash DC during the 60s and 70s. Been there often. Their booking office, Cellar Door Productions, quickly became one of the main booking agencies on the East Coast. A high school classmate of mine owned Hectors, a sub shop close by, so I always had a place to crash at his apartment above the Pall Mall restaurant after a night of party. Geez, that was insanely fun!
That video featured Danny Gatton (Gibson SG), Buddy Emmons (pedal steel) and bassist Steve Wolf, three of the best in the business, at the top of their game.
For the record, Gatton on the intro solo, then Emmons on the first extended solo, then Gatton kicks in about midway through. Then Wolf goes off on bass after that.
