There were a pair of Geneseo athletes sitting in back of the gator which led the men's race, cheering for Lee Berube et al. in the faces of the entire front pack. Pretty tasteless.

Seems to me like the only racer who would have even been able to hear them was Kosgei?

Only for the last 3 miles or so. The pack was right with him up until then.
A pair of athletes cheering for their teammate is tasteless? Makes sense.
I can definitely see how hearing people cheer for someone you're running against would utterly your spirits. Poor Kosgei, Maher, etc, they must have felt really awful that Lee's teammates supported him.
A pace cart should be neutral, this is not the first time Geneseo has done this. Geneseo should not have their athletes on the pace cart at a regional championship that they host.
During a race there are somethings that are supposed to be impartial. The starter and the pace vehicle are two that should be impartial. It would be inappropriate for a the starter to say, "There will be two commands, good luck team x." Along those same lines it is inappropriate to be on the pace vehicle and cheer for a team or individuals.

I'm sure the 1 or 2 guys in the back of the cart didn't have as much of an effect as running off the shoulder of Kosgei. Plus the cart pulled away when Kosgei did, so he didn't have it for the last 2 miles when it would actually matter.
I dunno what the big deal is, it had no effect on the outcome of the race since Heymann and Maher smoked him in the last 1.5 and he was well enough ahead of Ramsey anf Cortland pack.
It isn't a question of effect, it is basic etiquette and that is where Geneseo fell short.
NCAA.com has posted who got into nationals
Could those guys hear the cart? It's pretty far ahead of the race
anyone know if there are any pictures somewhere
I am sure there are 1000s on facebook.
First i doubt the guys could hear people on the cart, its stayed 5-10 seconds ahead. Second, some random cheering for a team, even if it is on the cart is nothing like having those retards from SLU get in the way of the runners, I feel really bad for those geneseo and cortland runners who had to deal with that crap.
That doofus from SLU DID f*** up the race!! Berube and O'Connor lost at least 5 spots each (O'Connor stopped completely, pushed the guy down ((into Berube and Newell)) and then started up again). 20 people went by him and he and Berube were playing catchup all race. Newell got blasted too but he's not in the scoring mix for Cortland like Berube and O'Connor are for Geneseo.
St. Lawrence University ought to issue an apology to the whole AR for the actions of that a-hole.
Supposedly he didn't stop there either. I heard he was stepping in front of runners to get "the shot" out in the woods too.

Geneseo has had a couple problems with gators this year, eh?
the dude got in the way and slowed a bunch of dudes down, it screwed with my teammates too. it was systematic. Cortland guys were the first to run into him.
anyone get hit by the steel rod on the corner right after passing the slu dude?
They should have made it plastic.
Biased pace carts, dudes with cameras, steel rods, whatever. It's a damn cross-country race! We were all out on the same course, at the same time, with the same crazed fans cheering for us. It's a helluva of a sport, and this is all part of it!
Have to say, the crowd this year was great, even if some of them were a bit... over enthusiastic.
