Bowie wrote "All the Young Dudes" for Mott the Hoople in an attempt that a successful hit would keep them from breaking up. On first listen Ian Hunter knew it was going to be a hit. Bowie later recorded the song himself, making him one of the few songwriters to "cover" his own song.

It never fails to strike me how audacious this little monologue in the song is. The whole 'bring him down...."
I thought their version of Sweet Jane was very good as well. And All the Way to Memphis.
