New York has a depth problem that just makes no sense to me because it’s not there on the girls side.
Lots of teams have very good 1-2-3’s but just can’t find a 4/5.
Part of this is the collapse of FM / them always having a nationally competitive team and now they can’t even get kids on the team.
But even if you go back 10 years - Aside from FM, there is Saratoga, Liverpool, Burnt Hills, Shaker, Corning, Ithaca, East aurora, Fairport, St. Anthony’s etc. that all have amazing running programs that consistently put together nationally ranked teams that just can’t get the depth to do it anymore.
Yes, the rest of the US got faster. But NY also got slower. In 2015 there was 6 teams that would have beaten MW today. Not to mention the winners were running team averages 30 seconds faster on the same course. And FM didn’t even win nxr that year.
It isn’t just at the top end either. In my senior year my team came in 5th at sectionals and we would have won this year for that section.
Covid does seem to be the turning point, but every other state in the us has bounced back and NY hasn’t. Part of me thinks it’s a mentality over XC that has shifted, but what’s most odd is that the girls still look great despite FM not having a team anymore.
