The immigrants who were entering recently were from all over the world, young, often violent males. They weren't docile lettuce pickers, I'm afraid.

If you care about the lettuce pickers so much, why keep them down as lettuce pickers? Up to 40% of food production requires Education/Certification (e.g., licensing, safety training) or documentation (being a legal citizen) to operate & manage. The difference in wages between the two types of workers can be over $50 per hour. Why not help them become citizens so they can grow their finances? Sending them back to do it correctly is also beneficial for them in the long run.
