Official 2018 Rome Golden Gala DL Discussion Thread - Will Emma Coburn rule the steeple in 2018?

This was a disappointing first track race of the season (her worst season starter since 2014 or so) for Krause but she seems healthy. She ran a pretty good half marathon (1:12) in April in Berlin.

It could be that she has timed her return from altitude training in South Africa poorly as she returned only a couple of days before the DL meeting. In any case she is not injured and plans to run 800 next week in Dessau and 1500 in Ostrava.

think krause will have problems winning the european championships this season. And international she is so far away and getting worse while the overall quality goes up. Her international season is basically already over in my opinion

It will not be such an easy win as two years ago but despite the poor performance yesterday Krause is still the top favorite for the European CS. The only other contender who has run sub 9:20 is Grovdal who is a stronger runner on the flat distances but has run exactly one steeple race in many years. If Krause gets back into 9:12-15 shape like last season she will probably win and 9:20-25 shape will be good enough for a medal (although a mere medal would be a disappointment, she clearly wants to defend her title). Gega and Schlumpf have PBs around 9:22, everybody else in Europe is around 9:30 or worse.

But it is true that Krause (who beat Coburn in the 2015 worlds) has not improved enough to keep up with Coburn and the Africans. She lowered her PB from 9:18 to 9:11 last year and certainly hopes to go sub 9:10 this year although this seems far away when looking at yesterday's performance.

The race of Grøvdal was a solo 9:13 at the end of a long season!!!! She has already PBed 4:06 in the 1500m this season!!!!!
