First, its a joke that people insinuate that Rupp dodges competition. In his track career there is no example of this happening. Though he excelled at 10000m, he primarily raced 5000m on the circuit and I think he only won a 5000m race once, back when his kick was getting good. The rest of the time he was getting buried in races near to 13:00 and obviously looking for that breakthrough that just never came. In the 1500m there has been plenty of depth in the USA and no need for him to go to Europe to get into a Diamond League event. Given his 1500m, 2 mile, and 10000m times, I'm shocked that he did not run faster in the 5000m, but it is clear that NOP was trying to get him there and put him into the races necessary for it to happen.
On the roads he raced NYC half marathon in 2011, finishing 3rd in 60:23, 7 seconds behind Farah. Most of the remainder of his non-marathon road racing results have been marathon prep efforts and his times have been very solid. I'm not aware of any that were bombs, so his training has gone pretty much according to plan and I don't see how that can be criticized.
In the marathon, the results speak for themselves and his race selection has been completely logical. Olympic Trials - duh, has to make Olympic team. Olympics - duh, going for an Olympic medal. Boston - huge historic race that his coach has a historical connection with, is part of the WMM, and serves as a smart entry point to big city marathon running. Chicago - traditionally faster course, also part of the WMM (huge cash prize for cumulative points), and significant race for an American runner. Boston - obviously looking to become a legend by joining Meb as one of the few American winners.
Regarding the "American-born" controversy, I think most of the readers here are unable to put that into context. You had to be competing in the awful period between the mid 80s and the current era, probably about 1990 - 2000, to understand the significance. During the 90s, American runners were terrible. The "word on the street" was that Africans had a genetic advantage, there were even TV shows (think 60 minutes) about why Africans and blacks in general were unbeatable on the track and the conclusion was that regular white guys shouldn't even try (and probably not even east African Americans who didn't run to school every day). The American record wasn't under 2:10. The only American medals during that period were Mark Platjees, an immigrant from South Africa, and Steve Spence, who won a WC medal on a hot day in a Yuki-like battle of attrition. We did not have any American-born runners that showed even a glimpse of hope until Webb came along (Kennedy being a minor exception), and during the start of the revival period our most successful runners were Khannouchi and Lagat, two people who competed professionally for African countries before becoming American.
Now that American born runners have had some success, mainly Rupp but now others like Jager and Centro, the idea that regular guy Americans can compete is firmly back in the minds of people and you can see the result of it everywhere (e.g. guys like True running nearly 13:00, Jager medaling in an event the Kenyans had locked up for decades, Centro gold in the 1500m, Americans defeating Kenyan imports in the NCAA, etc). The final straw will be an American who was born and raised in the US training system winning a major marathon. Meb's victories in NY and Boston were wonderful and I believe 100% he is American, but by virtue of having what in the 90s would have been "magic African genetics", he was unable to shatter the foolish myth that regular American guys can't compete. Rupp's win in Chicago was great, but let's face it, a dorky white guy has to win Boston, New York, or the Olympics for the myth to die its final death.
I understand the many controversies surrounding NOP and Rupp, but I have always viewed them from the angle that Salazar's goal has been to break the loser mindset that USA runners had in the 90s. He had to show Americans that they could compete on the world stage. His early efforts in the Dan Browne era were not successful and perhaps he realized he needed someone outside the system who he could control from the beginning. He got Rupp as a teenager and trained him like a pro from the beginning. Protected his mindset from day one, sold him on the long plan, and chipped away. His race selection had to be built around never overstepping his level and letting seeds of doubt creep in. Perhaps the one mistake was bringing in Farah. I have no opinion on whether NOP is fully doping or just pushing the gray areas but it is my opinion that Farah is totally dirty and either Rupp/Salazar drew the line at gray areas or were simply unable to fully dope because Rupp is tested all the time (maybe they started trying when he was running 3:50 for the mile/low 8:00 in the 2 mile and were too much at risk of failing tests). Not to mention that Farah may simply be a level of talent above Rupp all things being equal.
Overall, NOP has been very successful at breaking the loser mindset that existed in the 90s. Americans are medaling all over the place, high schoolers are tearing it up, the talent pool in the NCAA is deep, and everyone is ferociously mixing it up with the Africans. Having a Paul Chelimo around no longer feels like we brought in a ringer, it's just another guy who happens to be great but who American born runners are not afraid to mix it up with. If Cheserek ever finally becomes American, I do not believe he will be viewed the same way Lagat or even Meb was during their careers.
I believe Salazar will see his mission through to the end, getting Rupp on the top of the podium at Boston or the Olympics. I don't think they care much about the fast time in the marathon but he might get one or two cracks at it. Once Rupp is done, I'm sure Salazar will retire, and I believe American runners will continue to shine on the world stage.

Nope. The only fortuitous circumstances are that the IAAF still allows men to race in the womens 800m..luckily for the Africans. If it wasn't for that the US would have another couple of medalists. Very fortuitous for you indeed.

Rupp fading?! I'm not a big Rupp guy, but do you all even watch the races? Ya he got dropped by the GOAT Kipchoge in Rio, ya he got dropped by Kirui (top 3 marathoner) at 2017 Boston, but it's like all you haters just omit his last 10K at Chicago? Who in this race is going to run away from him? Lemma? Got blasted in Chicago - his Dubai time is irrelevant. Worku? No. Chemlany? No.
Rupp's competitors here are clearly B-level guys who couldn't run in London or Boston. Coming in fresh Rupp would be the HUGE favorite, the only variable is how much has he recovered from his 19 mile jog in the rain last Monday?

We are aware that Rupp's name no longer shows up on the list of runners on the race website.
I emailed the Prague Marathon organizers yesterday (when he was on the list of runners). I asked them if they could confirm that Rupp is running the race. This is what they said.
"yes, that is right. He´s going to participate."
So I published our story.
Since the story has been published, Rupp's name no longer appears on the list of runners. I have emailed the organizers again to ask if he is still running and also left a message for Rupp's agent Ricky Simms. Neither of them have responded to me at this point.
