I don't understand the logic of thinking its acceptable to not train with a team but be able to race with them and where their jersey.

Can you train with a private coach in any other sport and expect to be part of the team?

Incorrect. Brentwood girls were very good in the 2000s, and the boys were very good in the 2000s for a few years when Dave Milner coached them.

In WCS, Ravenwood is the reigning AAA state champion.

Everyone knew the rules, you are very ignorant if you think otherwise. Of course everyone is in denial mode. The reason why BHS has not had good coaches in recent years is because of Guy Avery. His meddling with the program chased away the last good coaches in 2011. Since that time the school has put coaches in position based on Guy Avery's recommendation and of course they ended up being coaches he could control. One of the recent coaches was someone he actually had coached previously. Coincidence, I don't think so. The current coaches are the first since 2011 that are qualified and were smart enough to get him out so that there can finally be a cohesive team that actually practices AND works out together. These coaches actually do put the kids first. Don't like it? It's a done deal, quit arguing and move on with Guy.

Ignorance to a rule or law isn't an excuse. I find it hard to believe that Avery didn't sign anything that reference an employee rule/handbook/code of conduct/etc. And if they didn't give him said handbook/rules/etc he should have held off signing it until he received and read it. There is even a disclosure on this site that says by posting I have read and will abide by the terms and conditions on the link on the bottom of this page. Whatever Avery signed would be in his personell file and that will answer everything. Also, while one would hope the superiors know the rules, their ignorance and failure to inform you, doesn't save your job or reputation. The point is, Avery messed up. The school district messed up. They all should be punished accordingly. For a volunteer coach that means you are gone, for a more tenured and senior employee it could mean some sort of disciplinary action or even termination.

Additionally, I find it naive and lacking of morals that someone would think it is okay to volunteer at a public school and then solicit and/or accept payments from student athletes and their parents, especially during the season. If in the off season he wants to host a camp or clinic for payment, submit a written request to the school and let them give you the thumbs up. Then he would be able to say, I submitted a written request, they approved it, it wasn't mandatory or during the season and it was open to people outside of Brentwood HS. If he's that great of a coach, the people will attend and pay.

There have been, historically, across our district, more coaches that are inadequate than adequate. If the coaching had been decent, there would have

been no need for private coaches. While Milner was coaching at Brentwood, was there a private coach BHS athletes were training with?

There is nothing that shows that Avery knew the rules. That is factual. But, I am fine with you continuing to live in denial of that fact, and continuing to express your uninformed opinion. The rest of your post is still just conjecture. The current coach had zero paid coaching experience before he was hired. I understand his stance that he wants to be the sole coach, without cooperating with anyone else, and limiting interference. That is the new reality. So, the best 6 out of the top 8 male runners, and top 4 out of the top 5 female runners made the decision to continue with Avery. To give up the opportunity to run on the school team, something they all wanted, says a lot about both Avery and Duncan. Good luck.

I'm curious. So that's ten runners right there, which is anywhere from $4000-5000 a month just from one team. How much is Guy reporting on his taxes? The 10% IRS whistleblower fee would be totally worth it! And yes, Ravenwood won state last year in cross country.

Big Cur, you should try reading prior posts so things will not have to be repeated. I requested the personnel file for Avery and Duncan. Avery signed one single form, which basically says, that he agrees to volunteer for the school team. No disclosures were made regarding policy.

That is on the district, Principal, and AD. Duncan's form has disclosures he initialed, like the FERPA disclosure and internet policies, and a variety of others. On his forms, there were still no policies disclosed related to the two violated.

You have it backwards. Avery was first a private coach and received payments long before he was a school coach. The AD and Principal knew this, yet, still asked him to be a school coach, again, without disclosing the policies. They, alone, messed up.

But, just for the sake of argument, what is unethical about charging a fee for expert training, which kids would pay if he was or was not the school coach? And if kids became aware of him while training under him, what is wrong about them deciding to pay him to train them? He was not getting paid as a school coach. If I took your view, I suppose I would be against any business being in our schools, which would be ridiculous.

Who knows. How much are you reporting on your taxes? That kind of ignorant remark has no place. Oh, you are talking the girls' team at Ravenwood. Would have helped to clarify. How did the boys do? Did not see them in the top 24. No boys' team? Why?

Ravenwood has a solid boys and girls program. Their region is really tough and they narrowly missed qualifying.

What place was your son at State in xc?

Please share the form since you are in possession on it. No where does the form say that you are bound to the rules of Brentwood HS? All it says was I agree to volunteer coach the team? What was it written I a napkin? Anywho, provide the form or we know you are lying...

Let's not pretend that no one found success at bhs before Milner and Avery. Or that the coaches were bad, even right before them. Ladies were pretty dominate under the coach at time: 2team titles in xc, fln qualifier second to only Jenny Simpson (back when FLN actually meant something), and a different runner who was multi AA in college after multi all state in hs, all in the mid 00s.

Gosh, read the posts. Nobody claimed that nobody had success before these two good coaches. And who knows which coach was most responsible for the ones you mentioned. The comment was that, historically, across the district, there are more inadequate coaches than there are adequate coaches. That is my opinion.
