I'm glad to see so many mentions of Duane Allman, who I think was the best.
Jerry Garcia was right up there, though. The man had a golden touch.

I don't have the time, patience, or alcohol to read through all 8 pages of this thread, so forgive me if I repeat anyone's nomination. I have to toss BB King in the mix.

Ok I like Nirvana and all, but anyone who puts "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on a list of 100 greatest guitar solos (which is what I assume your first list is, correct me if I'm wrong) is smoking some serious crack. Cobain and technical virtuosity never really had much of anything to do with each other, not that that really matters. But being a great musician just wasn't what made him and Nirvana great.
I don't have time to go through the whole thread, but I'll put a vote out for Nile Rodgers.
knophler hendricks clapton
Agreed. I thought the same thing when I saw Kurt on that list. A friend of mine tried to argue with me a few years ago that Kurt Cobain was one of the best guitarists in modern rock music. Btw, this friend of mine had never played guitar before in his life. I really like Nirvana, but great guitar music it ain't.
I like that Billy Corgan is on there though. He can wail. I don't really think of him as one of the great guitarists of our time, but he's one of my favorite circa the early 90's.
Ex Mrs Wineturtle (The First) said to post Les Pauls picks as favorite players-she points out he said favorite not best. I say to be a Les Paul fav you must be dam good..in no special order:
George Benson
Pat Martino
Al DiMeola
Jeff Beck
James Burton
Andres Segovia
Carlos Montoya
Django Reinhart
George Barnes
Eddie Lang
Snoozer Quinn
Wes Montgomery
Jimi Hendrix
Leadbelly
Link Wray
Scotty Moore
Bonny Raitt on Slide
Ex-Mrs Wineturtle(The First) lived around the corner and up the block from Fat Tuesdays on Third Ave NYC when Les played Monday nights(?) for a few years and got to know him
a little bit.For the younger set please look him up he really did change the music world(for the better I must say).

I can't believe that only one person mentioned Joe Satriani. He has to be the best. Followed closely by Vai. Eric Johnson isn't bad, but he's not up there with those two.
yeah i totally forgot about satriani when i mentioned vai and malmsteen. if you have ever seen the G3 concert on dvd, the one from denver, you'll see that satch can play just as fast as those guys when he needs to. his songs obviously arent as fast as Vai's, but they way they are written and played is much better IMO.
Eric Johnson on the otherhand, has one of the most beautiful sounds ever. its so pure, and he can play just as fast as the other people.
but what it all boils down to is SRV. fast, soulful, mastermind, influence, range, plus he sweats a whole lot.
Yeah, Segovia, and then there is Julian Bream and John Williams, individually and as a duo. If you're good, amplification and electrification is second rate stuff.
And then there is Fahey, Kottke, Peter Lang, Doc Watson, William Ackerman, John Lee Hooker, Mississippi John Hurt, Montoya, and Manitas de Plata.
John Abercrombie
Check out the 'Gateway' album from 1975!
Bonham is the best drummer ever easily. Especially if you have listened to the live recordings. He didnt have the 30 piece set or a double bass pedal. There is no one that can match him. Everybody wants to be bonham but they need a double bass pedal to even come close. out
