The risk worked out.
It clearly didn't work out for him. He tried to go through a space that had a very high risk of him ended up on the wrong side of the rail. The Ethiopian runner was in the middle of the lane. There wasn't enough room to go inside the rail on him.
He clearly was faster than some other guys in that field. Run at the back, try to move up and get boxed in on the inside, and pray that the inside lane opens up. That's not often a recipe for tactical success.
