It's hard to fathom this list without Reilly, especially, but the cross country results from back then are hard to compare with the results of the last 30 years. Still, he held the national record in the two-mile with a time 10 seconds faster than most on this list.Greg Kuntz is the only name I would consider adding, but he doesn't have the Footlocker success of Dressel, Gardner or Weitz.Hawkins makes for an interesting study. He was a few years ahead of me so I remember him with awe. But, his success came during a terrible stretch for US distance running. He was a double Footlocker qualifier, double state winner, and the second-best two-miler in the country, but his cross country speed ratings don't rate very well at all, though an imperfect measure to be sure, and his track times are not any better than those who came after him. It is hard to tell if he would be just another top runner if he were competing in an era where breaking 9 is commonplace or if he would have raised his game to the competition and been an 8:40s, sub 14:50 Sun Willows (converted to 5k) national-caliber stud. His Washington performances were largely solo efforts and he lacked the competition that Anderson, Dressel, and Gardner had on a consistent basis. Not sure, just interesting given how the performances he had back in the mid-90s are fairly common in Washington today.

I think swapping Reilly with Hawkins is agreeable. As we've both noted, it's pretty challenging to analyze the constant and fast results of the runners from the last 20 years, against those from the 60s/70s especially. Reilly was a beast and is overlooked greatly (when compared to Lindgren and Ryun). However, his two state runs at 2.3mi (worth sub-15 for 5k) don't give a lot of traction when looking through the lens of HS XC. Randy James and Roscoe Divine would be the other two who were beasts but are hard to judge (Lindgren just gets a pass...).

I agree with your points on Hawkins. I think he definitely would have run fast than 14:40 at Sun Willows if he had the competition that came before/after him. I still think he's a valid contender for the top 7 with two Sun Willows domination and two FL appearances. I feel like he doesn't get a lot of respect within the Mead/Kiter/Tenforde frame with the things he did. It's sad that he, like many WA HS XC greats, didn't find success in the NCAA realm, but it didn't seem like his only commitment at Stanford.

No way Dulong is not on that list. He was a super star in HS. What did McArdle do? This is based on HS performance, Moynihan also belongs there. I would put Barry Sirchis ahead of Amirault, Barnicle, Green, Quigley and McArdle. You could put mark Coogan ahead of that group and maybe dan Foley of St. John's Prep. This is all based on HS XC.

Chris Curtin from Mepham has to be on this list - 1982 Kinney National Champ and former VCP CR holder for the 2.5 mile course.

Connie Jo Robinson, Reading, Ohio, won the Kinney/Foot Locker in 1981. I think she ran 16:40. I don't know how many state titles she won.

So I've made as many updates to rosters as I could, and I started plugging in some times. I've relied heavily on this website, which has some great images as well. I will need help for the blanks. Take your state and give significant HS marks. In order we run 5000m for XC, but I know that is not always the case. For CA runners, I also provided Mt. SAC times when possible. For easterners, I tried to give VCP (2.25 mi) times when possible. I get the sense from some that modern times on VCP ain't what they used to be. The same holds true when comparing Mt. SAC's 3 mile (2.93 mi) of the modern vs. vintage eras.

The list would be dominated by early 70's runners. Gordon Oliver won Easterns in 71, held the Penn Relays mile record for 30 years. Of course Sandridge broke Marty Liquori's course record at Easterns in 72 where PG County took 1st, 3rd and 4th. State Champion Jeff Smith didn't make the trip.

High school XC, you can't put Webb ahead of Hunter. Hunter was FootLocker champ, and a higher Jr. Year finisher. I demand an immediate order change😉

Younger guy so not totally familiar with what Art Dulong or Tom McArdle did, but no way Jon Green should be left off this list. Two time state champion, two time footlocker qualifier, and smashed the course records at two of the three state meet courses his senior year. I would certainly switch him with Barnicle at the least
