Even with this story, of the 3 people that agreed to talk to us, only two ould use their names. There is big fear even from people not being threatened - just observing it.

From a PR standpoint, that would be a terrible idea. Wright is one of the few universally-liked public figures in the sport and her willingness to speak candidly (and humorously) on Twitter and to the press has made her a fan favorite. She gets better press than many other more well-credentialled Nike athletes, and a company having the PR problems that Nike is needs every defense weapon possible at its disposal.
On top of that, allowing Wright to continue to train with Mackey would be a brilliant way to play this off as a one-off incident rather than an ongoing feud. The biggest mistake they can make right now is playing into their growing image as the vindictive behemoth they truly are... better to take a stab at magnanimity and inclusiveness, disingenuous as it may be.

I don't see the two situations as similar at all. With one you have a variety of people referring to and interpreting the meaning of different incidents over a long time from, saying different things, some saying they saw something, some saying they felt a wall of information etc. etc. in the other you have one incident observed live by several people. With the Capriotti incident you might have usual minor discrepancies between eye witnesses, but it is clear the incident took place as described. The cause might be debatable, but you have multiple witnesses to one incident. That is really nothing like people that came forward regarding the NOP doping story.

No questions. No second chances. Out the door. When boundaries are firmly understood, it makes it easy to have a productive, cooperative, and pleasant work environment.
Yeah I do, oil and gas industry. Common for people to scream at each other and yell obscenities, especially in the field/construction site/offshore.
But a threat to kill or harm something would be taken seriously, instant firing even in the situations

Considering this all came out right after the BBC/ProPublica allegations against the Nike Oregon Project, I wonder if the way the articles were written that Capriotti believes Mackey was one of sources in the BBC/PropPublica.
Now based on the details of the police report, that doesn't seem to be the case.
The option of anger over the way they are competing for a similar athlete is presented as a possibility in the story but that didn't really cross my mind as a possibility as it's' not like Brooks and Nike are really battling normally over athletes of the same caliber.

You are mistaking fierce rivalry for making serious threats that might lead to bodily harm. That's not sport, that's common violence.
This happening near the top of the sport is no way to run a sport.... Unless it's entertainment wrestling, which it's getting close to being anyway.
