NYC marathon and hurricane

I tell you what. I'm going for a big PR. They better have the aid stations set up right so I can get my gu taken on time. And once I finish I want my foil blanket!

Water will be available at more locations than usual.

Will the course be clear of trees?!

I don't feel sorry for NY, natural disasters happen all over the world and in other parts of our country and the people of NY don't give a rats @$$ about anyone else.

Now all of the sudden NY gets hit and we're all supposed to throw them a pity party?

There are massive numbers of immigrants from just about every country in NYC. When disaster strikes in China, there are nearly 700,000 Chinese New Yorkers who not only sympathize, but send money back to family. During the Potato Famine, there were more Irish born people in NYC than in Dublin.

So it's insane to say that New Yorkers don't care about people in other parts of the world. There are hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers with direct ties to each part of the globe.

How many people will start the race this year? 30,000? 20,000?

Good thing 25,000 hobby joggers and the NYRR are doing all that they can to get on the VERY limited seats available on flights into the City. It's really important that they run a race this weekend.

What is going to happen with the course? I was suppose to take the ferry and my hotel in the financial district is closed.So I got bumped to a hotel in times square. Which is fine. But it would be nice to know about the start and transportation.

Mary looks awful in this Th AM video - she is clearly torn up by this and that NYT article.

She basically says

1) They are hiring private buses to get people to the start

2) It was Bloomberg's decision, not hers, and she would have delayed if asked.

3) They will make the race into a telethon to raise money

4) She and the mayor see the race as a way to pull the city together and raise money.

I always tend to lean toward doing things - get off the couch and do something - I am for this and I put my name on the list of volunteers if they need me.

Is there one person on here bitching and moaning about the marathon actually given one cent to NYC relief? The question is rhetorical.

Since you are the expert, instead of ""bitching and moaning" about the discourse here, why don't you list the places that are taking donations and will ensure the cash goes to those who need it?

I don't want to write a check to the Red Cross or another generic agency and have it go elsewhere.

If the thread annoys you, don't click on it and STFU. If you have a place to donate, post a link and STFU.

I don't tend to feel bad for anyone who is compensated to the tune of half a million $/yr. For what is basically a fun job.

Especially when they have already demonstrated themselves to be as clueless as to suggest a marathoner go to the starting line with nothing they would also like to have at the finish line.

She needs to step down, or offer the part of her job (and salary) to someone who can actually do it. She can continue to have a great time jetting the globe and recruiting talent for the race, but clearly she has lost touch with the more mundane aspects of running, and for that matter life itself. Although perhaps that latter criticism applies more to Bloomberg in this case.

Not likely. Plus most of Central Park is under water.

There will be fully stocked aid stations to help runners during the marathon yet NYC is struggling to bring water and aid to families still suffering from the hurricane. Doesn't that seem a little wrong?!?

I live in the area and can tell you for certain the area is not back up to speed. Our efforts should go towards helping those effected by this tragedy, not helping runners complete a marathon.

People need to start thinking more as human beings and less as runners. A friend of mine who is FDNY and has been training hard for the NYC marathon vehemently opposes running the race.

We need to get our priorities in order. This and 9/11 are different circumstances although both tragedies so I cannot draw any direct comparison.

A nice article on ESPN to put this in perspective for all those posters who weren't affected by the storm, but are voicing their opinions.
