Someone with no talent can drag themselves to a sub 1:30 but not much more imo.

I googled you, you're a top masters runner from Holland. At your age, even 1:30 would be very impressive.
My perspective as a 2:04 half marathon runner who (obv) just recently started running at 40%:
- Top 1% at the most competitive half marathon in the country is def "elite"
- Any time in the top 15-20% of the same field, at least, is "impressive". Particularly since that is out of a bunch of people who already run seriously enough to pay money to run a half marathon!

Even Raytheon only produced 14 runners of 1:39 half marathon ability.
Wow! I ran a 1:33 last fall as part of a marathon and felt strong throughout, but would be curious how that would translate if I ran it as my actual race. 1:33 is still pretty slow. Although I think if I ran anything under 1:30 I'd be happy this year. I don't want to expect too much lol!

What age? That's a good question. Let's say for the sake of discussion this guy is in his early-30s and isn't a 25-year-old former collegiate runner who can stil just get off the couch and crush it.
That’s me. 33. I didn’t run in college. Half PR of 1:10. There’s actually a lot of us. Athletic dudes who switched to running post college, often times, after playing another sport like Lax. With decent mileage 30+ most people get under 1:20. With a group and workouts people start going under 1:15. With some LR trolling and Wejo worship you’ll hit 70 and under. A kid in my office had no idea what he was doing, started running by training for the Boston marathon and was very soon a 1:16 half, 16:xx min 5k person.
Def needs to be under 1:20 to even get a slight head turn.
Good post. The athletic background (including wrestlers and swimmers) who take up running, helps a ton. Even someone with low mileage but dedication can get fast quick and take chunks off time over a few weeks-months, and then learn EZ days EZ/hard days hard and get even more mileage and get naturally faster after that.
That’s impressive but Steve moneghetti maybe just a couple of years younger than you in his 60s goes around in 1:14
