Chris's behavior all year has been strange. I can't get that push off the track thing out of my head. Please excuse my political incorrectness, but I always assumed Chris would knock any pushy African off the track if things got physical. But he simply gave up in that race. He also gave up in a few other races this season. Maybe it is his head. Maybe it is other factors. It isn't normal.

I, for one, am excited to see him run at Worlds. Yeah, he may not medal, but It'll be good experience. It sucks for Solinsky, but this is an awesome opportunity for Bumbi.

I can't believe I just wasted all of my time reading this thread just to see you throw around CAPITAL LETTERS and pretend that you somehow understand this situation at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course, but there's a good reason that most people keep their mouths shut. When you have the AR in the 10k you can drop out of whatever damn race you want. Don't give me any of that bull that if you were there you would be "more of a man" by stepping up to the starting line. Chris Solinsky's credentials speak for themselves, so when you actually get on his level, you can judge his manhood.

Thanks for telling it like it is and calling a spade a spade, Sprint Geezer. You get the big, international running picture, while the majority of the folks taking part in this thread -- those who see no problems with what Solinski has opted to do -- are showing that their grasp of running is limited to American running only, and not what it takes to be the best in the world.

Hilarious, Geezer. First, when Tyson Gay gets an injury, Brojos say he should start, you leap to Gay's defense, saying distance runners don't know what it's like to sprint. We don't know how hard it is on the body! Oh no, boohoo! We don't know what it's like to sprint! Our puny 12 second 100m doesn't compare to the stress true sprinting puts on the body.

And now, in true ignorant fashion, you come here lambasting Chris Solinsky for pulling out of the World Champs when he could be giving another runner that "once in a lifetime opportunity" you've so heavily touted because... you know what it's like to have a hamstring injury and run a 5K like Chris Solinsky?

You don't know jack, old man. You think you jogging a 5K in 18:40 or some garbage means anything? Having had the nerve to come on here and say none of us know how to sprint, you think your hobby jogging qualifies as knowing what it's like to line up with the big boys? Yeah, we don't know how to sprint, but clearly your puny 5K measures up so well that you know EXACTLY what its like. What it's like to run 12:5X. Let me spell this out for you as clearly as possible: you don't know anything. You don't know anything about distance running, and you certainly don't know what it's like to run a hard 5K. Your 18:40 is meaningless.

As far as the whole "I competed at a high level", like heck you did. What high level did you compete at? If it was sprinting, I doubt it, but even if you did, it was irrelevant. You DEFINITELY never did anything worthy of "high level" distance running, so just be quiet and slink your butt home while you still have some dignity.

What are your qualifications? You claim to have an understanding of biomechanics and sports medicine? Come on Geezer, don't disappoint me. Prove me wrong. Show me you're not COMPLETELY ignorant. My guess is that you're just another boaster on the net who hopes no one will call him out on it, but doesn't know anything. Well, here's your chance to validate yourself or leave it be. You're being called on it.

Oh, and I'm not a Solinsky fanboy, another cheap slur you hurl at people who ACTUALLY have some idea of what it's like to compete in high level distance running. But feel free to respond in typical ad hominem fashion, or dodge this post all together. It wouldn't surprise me.

It is unfortunate, but I will be the reminder of the bad news, lest you all have decided to forget, or have accepted what your governments have told you, or what they have failed to report regarding the horrific Fukushima disaster; South Korea is a close neighbor to Japan.

It bothers me to be the one that brings a reminder of these matters. However, it also pains me at times, with the knowledge I have, to not say anything while people go on ignorant and oblivious. Afterall, maybe there actually is something that a multitude of voices can accomplish, even at this late hour; maybe there still is some remote chance of stopping, or slowing down, the pathway to destruction our governments have been going down for decades now.

Around the time of the Oregon race earlier in the season, from which G. Rupp pulled out of, those in the general population of Seattle were reportedly breathing 5 'hot particles' a day, while those in Tokyo were breathing 10 'hot particles' a day; more active athletes in the Pacific Northwest were suspected of getting 10 'hot particles' a day.

Other people have said this and it hits the nail on the head. Solinsky is giving his place up to another capable runner (he's hit the A standard), another runner who hasn't competed at WCs before.

Rather than training/rehabing on until the race and risking a DNS or a DNF where its too late to replace his spot. He is pulling out early enough so that doesn't happen both for the good of team America and for Bumbalough(sp?).

All these criticisms are valid of someone pulling out and leaving a spot empty at WCs, but that clearly isn't the case

Well, I'm not sure if you are implying another premeditated race pullout by a Nike athlete in order to avoid the friggingshima fallout, but if there can be any silver-lining to Solinsky's dropout from world's, maybe this is it? uhmmm...somewhat depressing. :-{

This is the same kind of thing as his run off the track. It's not that it's exactly wrong, but you feel that a truly competitive athlete wouldn't do it. Just like when he ran off the track and didn't bother to try and finish the race, I do think that most athletes have to be forced not to run in championship races - they don't just think about it and post on twitter, they try absolutely everything they can to get there and their coaches basically have to hold them back. We all know people, including ourselves, who have tried to run on broken legs, sprained ankles, fractured hips, etc. because they just couldn't bear the thought of not being on the starting line.

Just like with the off the track incident, Chris isn't rationally wrong in measuring the pros and cons and deciding making an injury worse isn't worth it when he probably doesn't have the chance to medal anyway. But you can't help feeling that a true competitor doesn't add up the benefits and make that kind of emotionless, bureaucratic-type decision, they just want to run. I think that's increasingly an American thing, where as others have said, everything has to be perfect and they have to be perfectly on record pace and etc. etc. or they drop out or don't want to run and aren't willing just to tough things out because they can't imagine not running. They're so pampered in their entourage of being constantly catered to that they're losing touch with the competitive fire.
