Either someone's done their homework to pull the random SSU reference out or this really is Julie's little sister (who's also starting to run well).

The track team. I am a cross country guy. In cross the team is only 7 people all doing the same thing.
In track, I think the "team" has more to do with the coach than the athlete.
The athlete wants to run his/her event period...and why should the distance runner care about the shot put thrower?
The only one who cares is the coach, the same coach who will push an athlete to the limit for "points".
I ran track for me and no one else, I was often angry at coaches for not consulting me as if I were a piece of silverware without an opinion or voice when they made me run 4-races a meet.
Its about respect, respecting the Athlete as a human being. If a coach can't do that, then why allow them to ruin you for their own selfish purposes.
I will state the #1 problem in our ENTIRE running system. PREP coaches. Period. We have too many people with too large of egos who have zero idea what they are doing or talking about ruining our young men and women...for what purpose? None but there own.
She obviously loves to run, you take the coach out of the equation and I bet she lines up every time and give 100%, but when the coach starts adding on and on and on to something she already loves to do it becomes more about the coach than simply lining up and running.

Agreed that there are a lot of bad prep coaches out there, but there are just as many or more selfish athletes. It is a give and take thing. My son has a great coach that gets his opinion on what events to run and rarely doubles him. However, when it comes to a bigger meet like conference my son is more than willing to double to help the team do well. Why should track be any different than other sports. The quarterback has nothing to do with the defensive back, but they are all part of the same team and when everyone goes out and does their part, the team will be more successful. Many people have defended Julie for not going to practice and that doesn't make sense. Coaches put their heart and soul into helping these kids achieve their goals and when you have one perso that is "above" the team, it doesn't do anybody any good. Yes the coaches with the huge egos and the ones that will abuse an athlete just to get more team points should not be coaching, but in my area I see more good coaches than bad ones.

Very well said. Kids today think they have such a sense of entitlement. Nobody should be part of a team and then be able to do whatever they want. Think how that would work out in the real world. "Mr. Boss, I work better on my own so I am just going to do my work at home when I feel like it". "Sorry, Ms. Employee, but for the beterrment of this company you need to follow the rules of the group or you can find another job". There is a reason that teams, organizations, work establishments, etc. have rules. Some people have a hard time conforming to those rules. There is nothing wrong with that and in Julie's case, maybe she was better off without the team. However, with that decision, comes the fact that she should not be able to compete as part of the team, even if it is the state meet. That is what happened with Julie, but to blame the coach for expecting her to follow the rules that her teammates had to is just absurd.

There's a big difference between a payed job and Cross Country. You don't get payed at Cross Country. It's understandable that you can't miss work, but xc isn't work. XC is supposed to be fun!

Julie is a student at the school, and the team is for the students, not the coach.
A person's personal standards should come first, #1 above anything else.
When I was in high school, a certain coach would try to force me into doing certain things his way. I refused, ignored him, and kept doing my own training. One time he ordered me to stop running during a warmup. I kept going so he threatened to boot me off the team, so I kept on going longer, while everyone else was sitting up in the stands. Fortunately he was an asst and not the head coach. A friend told me later the kids were making bets on how long I'd keep running. I had no respect for that coach, but I did for all the rest of the coaches, because they cared about the kids and what happened to us.
Had that coach kicked me off the team, I still would have done what I did. And it would have remained a key moment in my life. As it was, I was the only one who went to the state meet from the school.
I feel like I am missing something here.
In my high school program, students competed on a track or cross country team on school time and received academic credit for it. Technically, it was a class like any other. If you did not attend that class or do the work that was asked of you, you did not receive academic credit for that class, nor did you obtain any of the privileges associated with being in that class/sport.
In order to represent my school and receive academic/recognition for my efforts, I had to play by the rules and follow the program promoted by the track and cross country coaches. It was as simple as that.
What is so hard about this? If this girl tried to pull this in a DI college program, she would be kicked off the team quickly. You can't have all of your runners reluctant to buy into the team program, and just doing their own workouts. Having one super-talent does not help build a team full of runners over the long term at the collegiate level. The same training principle should apply at the high school level.
As I always tells kids and parents, there is a popular team, very well-represented in meets all over the country, very flexible program, puts the individual athlete's interests first every time, great for controlling parents, also great for free-spirits, and it's essentially free, save the race entry fees. They go by the name UNA, look them up.

Not if I was the coach.
There are two kinds of people in the world, those who try to force others to conform, and those who help others to succeed.
Most of those in business are trying to sell something to customers. But I could never do that, probably because I didn't care if they bought anything, especially something they didn't want. Instead of that, I asked people what they wanted to do, and then I helped them to get what they wanted. My philosphy would be the same as a coach.
By the way, many D1 coaches don't require people to work out at specific times. We had a national record holder on our college team, who only worked out at team practice once, and never again after that. The rest of us were welcome to work out with him, as long as we did it on his schedule, and could keep up with him. Likewise I never did the schedule that was set up by the coach, and he never said a word to me about it. Without going into details, we had a very very good team.
After viewing her interviews in FloTrack, I think she may have needs that might not be met on a team environment. Sometimes kids can be cruel and maybe this was a safe and healthy decision made by her and her family to protect her.
