It was great seeing Alan finally race again.
When you have run 3:46 before there are such expectations placed on him.
This was a very good baseline performance. Conditions did not look great on the wet track. Since I have no idea what sort of training he has been doing I would assume for the time being that at best he is in an early season transition stage.
This race will help give him the stimulus needed to improve to the next race(s).
I for one believe that the talent is still there.
AlSal had AW run this race in England instead of Oregon so that it would generate a bigger buzz on letsrun.com. Now he is going to sit back and analyze the commentary on the message boards, then assimilate the collective wisdom into AW's training plan. He and Nike are unaware that AW is washed up.

I'm a one trick pony on this topic: he needs to move up. He's been racing the mile at an Olympic level for ten years; physically or mentally, he just strikes me as burned out on the distance. His (I believe) only 10k was a 27:33 and one of very few 5ks was 13:10. And he ran that before everyone was doing it.

Cool, wet track, looked like even splits, didn't rig up on the homestretch. Good start.
He'll be able to handle 1:57-1:58 for 1500 split comfortably and hopefully crack 3:38 this summer.
Next summer hopefully back to real world. Ye all have little faith.

The crop of young US 5000 runners is pretty stacked right now. I don't really see him breaking into the top 3 in the next 2 years. Maybe for Rio...
I'd agree give the improvements others have made-- but if he could improve at all similarly... in any case, I'd be very interested to see him race a 5k-- I think there's an argument that his talent ceiling might be higher than any other American's.
I really thought Al Sal had him on the right track by 1:52 would have a hard time getting into the fast heat at high school outdoor nationals. This is the guy who holds the American record in the mile and was one of the fastest runners in the world for a year. There is no excuse for this guy running 152.
Yes there is. Being injured for nearly a year. What the hell does that mean "There is no excuse for this guy running 152." That's like saying that El G should be able to just go out and bust a 1:45 or something right now, straight out of retirement.
Doesn't happen like that.
Having said that, I thought he would be faster simply because you see lots of guys come back from injury faster. For God's sake, I went to college with 3:45 1500 runners who would get a stress fracture, pool run for 6 weeks, run for 2 and bust 1:52 (indoors). These are guys who were 4:15-4:20 hs milers, not 3:53. So I did expect more.
But to say "there is no excuse" is stupid. I would say he has a decent excuse.
