a 46/47 guy can run 1:41/2.

a 47/48 guy can run 1:43/4.

a 43/44 guy can run 1:5x with very few exceptions (El Caballo, maybe a couple others so far).

Sorry,but Bolt and Gay are 100/200 runners. Johnson

was 200/400 type. What have Bolt and Gay done at 400m

compared with Johnson? Nothing! Do not look just the

200m times to estimate 100m potential.

Powell and Gay both ran ONE 400m last year, probably as a fitness test. Don't you think they could improve their times if they were training more specifically for the 400 event and raced it more often??????????????

I think what they did was pretty amazing considering they were training for a different event. Both of these guys could probably get in the 44sec range if they concentrated on it, especially Gay who isn't as bulky as Powell. Definetly the same for Bolt. There was another thread where Bolt talked about how his coach would probably talk him into doing the 400. Do you think they would try it without having some confidence that he could break the 400m record?????? Maybe he will get it but maybe he won't. Their confidence shows that he should surely at least get down to low 44's or in the 43's somewhere. Doesn't any of this make some kind of logic sense to you????? Just spouting off that they couldn't do it is a very weak argument.

No one has talked about the 1500m or the 5000m either. The only surmizing done was could he get the 400m record (good shot at it I think), the 800m record (not a very good shot I think), and could he break 1:50 in the 800m (a slam dunk if he wants to in my opinion).

Why do you guys continue to ignore the fact that Bolt just DID run a 43.XX? And then some of you are even doubting that he could run sub 45. It is not going to take him 1.5 seconds for the handoff. Seriously. Wariner and the rest of the top 400m runners run the open 400m .2-.5 seconds slower than their open 400m times. Do the math for Bolt.

I think it is dumb to doubt that he can run sub 45, but yes the running start in the relay is worth something (someone early posted 1.29 seconds I believe) so he does still have a ways to go but should be able to get there (the 43.xx he ran was a relay leg). Not sure what your last sentence is supposed to mean. If you meant to say they run their relays slower than the open 400m, then your wrong. I'm not sure what your comment on the handoff was about either. I think you may be a little confused.

Not true. Once EVER? As a professional sure, but he ran it all over the place as junior. You think he's never run an all-out 400m in training? I bet he's run quite a few in the last year or so.

Are you high? Why the hell would he run an all out 400 in practice? Do you know anything about training?

For anyone saying he can BREAK the 800 record, never going to happen. For those who don't think he could run a 1:49, I would think he could if he trained. This is one of the greatest athletes ever, 1:49 for 800 isn't a good time. If that Oregon dude (Sherer) can break 1:50 with training, Bolt can.

As for the 400, this thread is going to be awesome to bump when Bolt breaks 43 so we can all make fun of Alan.

I agree, Bolt is the man to run sub 43, anyone who doubts this has not been following the sport.

When I was in High School In California we had the State Champion in the mile and the State second place finisher in the 440y. The coach had them run an 880y at a dual meet to see how they stacked up against each other.

The mile guy, Jim Arriola, knew what the 880 was all about. The 440 guy, Donn Thompson, didn't really know what he was in for.

Well, Donn went out in 53-54 and Jim, who expected a much slower pace, went out in 58-59. Donn ran great through 660y before his wheels came off. Jim stated to pick it up but Donn had built up too much of a lead on him. I think was Donn and Jim both finishing in 1:58.

Donn managed to finish just ahead of Jim, but barely. Jim said Donn caught him unprepared for a fast pace the dual meet. Donn looked as if he died. I don't recall Donn ever trying to run an 880 again.
